Every once in awhile I would like to wake up my LinHES master backend from a Windows 7 desktop on my local network. The couple of programs that I tried failed for one reason or another so my questions is dos anyone have a magic program that works for our circumstance.

Thanks

If you're asking for a windows problem to send a magic packet for WOL, just do a quick google search for that. If you're asking how to enable WOL for Linux, consult the Arch Wiki's page on WOL.

Two things to check:

1. Is WoL enabled in the BIOS? Usually, there is a setting for this, but it isn't always obvious.

2. The mythbox has to be shutdown without disabling power to the interfaces. I.e. halt or poweroff must be called WITHOUT the -i option. This is sometimes hard to track as the various scripts sometimes hardcode it.

One way to check that these two have been done is to verify the Blinkenlight is still lit on the ethernet connection after the box is powered down.

Note that this implies the NIC card will be powered 24/7 which has some downsides. In my case, the NIC card started crashing every 3-4 weeks and required a hard reset. I decided to disable WoL to try and prolong the life of my on-board NIC.

Cheers,

Allen
