Post subject: | Debian packages |
Hi everyone! Since I'm very new to the debian world (and rather an average linux user) I'd like to know whether there is way to retrieve a list of available packages with apt-get or any other module downloadable with apt-get, or - even better - have an option to search for packages like you can with perl's CPAN manager (the shell, that is). I tried deselect hoping this would give me some interface more adequate to my needs, but I'm not really happy with it. My concrete problem is, I need a browser for X in order to troubleshoot my problem with help of the forum here while trying things on the console. Thanks! THomas |

From the source:http://www.debian.org/doc/user-manuals#apt-howto Google for synaptic (it is already installed). You can just ssh to the boxen (I assume you have another boxen that you're currently access the net from). |

also look for aptitude. it's a command line utility similar to synaptic that shows you what is installed an available from the repositories you have in your list. as for a browser apt-get install mozilla-firefox should work fine. |

Quote: http://www.debian.org/doc/user-manuals#apt-howto Thats the problem when you only google for "apt-get tutorial", you dont't find "apt-cache search" ... good how-to, now I don't even need a graphical interface. Thanks, could have found this myself though if I had searched for "any" distribution instead of only "stable" at http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages. So, thanks! t |
