Post subject:  Audio streaming from software capture card

I'm looking at being able to stream the line in on my software capture card on my myth box so that I can listen to some of the 24 hour news channels on my workstation at work during the day. I think I should be able to do this with something like shoutcast server, but I haven't tried using shoutcast for live streaming (but I have used it successfully for a test mp3 stream).

Does anyone have any experience doing what I'm trying to do? Am I asking for trouble if I am streaming the line in and Myth fires off a recording? Can multiple programs 'listen' to the line in device simultaneously?

problem your going to run into if you have only one tuner is that when you use vlc or some other stream serveing software it will lock your tunercard so you cant use it for tv. VLC is easy to get running on knoppmyth

Yeah, that's what I figured. It shouldn't be much of a problem as I don't do many recordings during the day.

Will VLC allow me to stream audio only?

In case anyone is interested, I was able to accomplish my goal of streaming audio from my soundcard using Icecast server and liveice encoder. Both are easily installed using apt-get .

While I appreciate that you did let us know that it is possible, there may be other people out there who would like to do the same thing, and somehow I don't think I was able to get it to work is going to help them along much.

If you could I'm sure they would appreciate a short walkthrough.

apt-get install icecast-server
apt-get install icecast-client
apt-get install liveice
cd /etc/icecast
cp icecast.conf.dist icecast.conf
edit icecast.conf to your specific settings
edit liveice.cfg to your specific settings
icecast -b
liveice

If anyone is seriously interested in using this and has problems with this ultra brief guide, let me know. I doubt seriously anyone is interested as not many piped in when I started the thread.
