I am on my 3rd install now and can't get this to work, I have installed the nvidia driver that is located in /usr/local/bin. However, everytime I copy over the nvidia based file for TV, my monitor goes out of sync and I'm screwed! I don't have an ethernet drop close so I can't ssh into the system.

All I want to do is to have DVI out supported on my projector. Everytime I boot with the projector, when X starts I get pixelated blocks of green, blue, and flashing garbage on my screen.

You should be able to do ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a console (which your monitor should show), log in and change the XF86* file until you find a setting that works. Not sure how you restart Xwindows to try the new file, but that must be on the forum somewhere. search is your friend.

the nvidia tvout sample file is for svideo not dvi. As a matter of fact I don't think there have been any sample config files posted for dvi. You are on the bleeding edge. You'll have to go that one alone. You might want to look at the hdtvhowto over on the wiki it talks a little bit about dvi. but from what I've heard dvi is a royal pain because computer dvi is different from tv dvi or something like that.

ok thanks, I have the modeline parameters for my projector. However, I'm not sure if I just plug those numbers into one of the XF86config-4 files?? Not sure how XF86 chooses which resolution to use.

Can I just delete the resolution and keep just a few without any problems?

When you start (or try to start) XFree86 it produces an enormous log file that goes into great gory detail about every feature and what it did and didn't like. You can get a lot of info from reading the log, including which modelines it is actually using and which ones it tossed.

The short answer is, you can toss all but one modeline out of your config file, as long as the modeline works. If you have more than one modeline, you can switch them on the fly with ctl-alt-+ and - key combinations. The other key combo to watch for is ctl-alt-bs which kills the X server and restarts it. (Useful if you have a myth frontend problem as it kills and restarts the frontend too.)

Yep, if you have the modeline, enter that in the "Monitor" section and delete the other resolutions. Then in the "Screen" section, enter the name of the modeline under the SubSection "Display" along with the desired bit depth and get rid of the other modes. Restart X and you're good to go, assuming the modeline is valid.
