Dumb question. But here goes 2.6.11.7-chw-4 What does the ".7-chw-4" in the revision number mean. Can't seem to find any info on this. Tks, mark |

2.6.11 is the mainline kernel version .7 is either the build # or the pre-release # of that version. -chw are the initials of someone who has forked it or is maintaining a separate patch set for special applications. -4 is his/her build # or release # -brendan |

pretty much right, other than the fact that the sable mainline kernel now goes by 2.6.x.x so the last number is actually a stable kernel release not a prerelease or patchlevel or anything like that. [rant] I think Linus must be on a crack bender or somthing cause at this point 2.6.11.7 is the latest "stable" release and they are working towards a "development" 2.6.12 release or something like that, of course at that point I'm not sure what the next "stable" release will be not sure if 2.6.12.1 will be "stable" or "development" and if it's "development" does that mean that the next "stable" will be 2.6.13? I really don't see why he decided to switch the development scheme. Probably cause he wanted to play with all the new stuff, but still be able to claim he was working on the stable branch, dont' know like I said I think he must be smoking crack. He should have just started the 2.7 development branch a while back instead of trying to shove all kinds of new stuff in the "stable" branch and breaking things every other release. [/rant] and for the chw it would be cecil somethinorother watson not sure his middle name. |

I'm going to guess that the H stands for Hammurabi for his skill at laying down the law about off topic posts and folks to lame or lazy to search for themselves. Or maybe it stands for "Hero" (No, not like the legendary Greek chick who drown, or the historical Greek mathematican from Alexandria! Sheesh... Give people a classical education and they think everything is a reference to the classics...) ![]() |
