Post subject:  network configuration issue

I imagine this is very simple to fix but I am not sure where to look.

From a graphical console I can ping a connected computer, whether logged on as user mythtv or root.
However when I ctrl-alt-F1(or F2, F3 etc) to a text console all pings time out.
If I start pinging from the text console then switch to the graphic console for a few seconds, then switch back to the text console, I find that pinging was successful while switched to the graphic console, but starts timing out once back in text.
I can also ping successfully from a shell inside the graphic console.

I am running R5A16, with no firewall I believe.
Is this an iptables issue? I can't find any network configuration that changes when I switch runlevel.

Thanks

That is indeed a very odd issue I've never heard of it. doing ctrl+alt+F2 does not change runlevels. actually id doesn't change anything at all other than you are using a console terminal instead of an X terminal Maybe one of the old unix heads around here have heard of this, but I've been using linux for close to 10 years, and I've never heard of it.

At a guess the difference is that he's logged in as two seperate users. The mythtv user in the xterm, and root in the consoles. Try doing an "su -" in the xterm and seeing if your results change. If it does, you probably have some kind of permissions or path problem... Make sure to use "su -" and not just "su"!
