Hey, I am looking to build a knoppmyth system. But I have a few questions first:
I have a PVR 350. Should I use the TV out is has or the TV out my video card (fx5200) has? Will everything display OK using the PVR TV out? As I have it now, on a XP machine, when the TV (TV software that came with it) isn't on, it just displays the color spetrum thing. Will it still do that on knoppmyth?
I'm just getting into all this stuff, but correct me if I'm wrong, you can surf the internet with knoppmyth? How is the resolution/visiability with that? readable at all?
I have NES, SNES, and MAME emulators - Can they all run under Knoppmyth? I know it comes with a MAME emulator, but what about the others?
Is there any kind of desktop enviroment in knoppmyth or is all menu based? Is the use of a keyboard and mouse necessary/recommended?
thanks and any help appreciated!!

Quote: I have a PVR 350. Should I use the TV out is has or the TV out my video card (fx5200) has? since your asking.. i think you should use the Nvidia Tv out. its easier to get running and _I_ feel its just as good. Quote: Will everything display OK using the PVR TV out? There will be problems displaying _anything_ but mpeg2.. so good luck seeing if that will work Quote: but correct me if I'm wrong, you can surf the internet with knoppmyth? How is the resolution/visiability with that? Yes myth has a buildt in mythbrowser.. I has a zoom ability to enlarge the text.. it works fine for most sites Quote: I have NES, SNES, and MAME emulators - Can they all run under Knoppmyth? I know it comes with a MAME emulator, but what about the others? Yes it comes with zsnes.. it will run all the emulators. Quote: Is there any kind of desktop enviroment yes but its minimal.. its fluxbox. Quote: Is the use of a keyboard and mouse necessary/recommended?
no you can use a IR remote, most people do.. i personaly use a wireless keyboard. but most people recomend a remote(though you DO need a keyboard for backup reasons).
You need to READ READ READ.. this forum will be a good start..but using knoppmyth/myth is also needed to learn it.

wow...thanks for all the answers. exactly what I was looking for.
oops, actually have one more about the sound. I should use the PVR connections for that right? not the sound card connections?

Sound output generally comes from your sound board or motherboard sound, but someone who is usng the PVR-350 video output realy needs to answert that for you...

you can use the sound out from the pvr350, but you will only get sound from recordings/livetv you will not get sound from music video's etc, if you want it all to work you route the sound out of the pvr350 back into the linein of the soundcard.

With an FX5200, why bother with the 350's TV out? In my mind, it makes no sense. Especially if you want to play games...

prob wat i will end up doin and i like that sound out right into the sound in on the sound card..
now all i need is a cpu/motherboard and a sound card. and i am thinkin about getting anoher tuner, maybe a PVR 250. I want to be able to watch and record at the same time.
myth will auto recognize 2 tuners and it has a feature for recording something while watching something else?

Various utilities exist to create DVDs out of recorded content. Please search.

Yes, and yes.
- Avoid SATA drives for you're primary disk if you want to have an easy time.
- There were some issues with one of the SB cards but I don't remember which one so you''ll have to search for the details...

ok, i went ahead and set up a box (i found an old duron laying around - 750mhz, 768(?) memory, onboard sound, fx5200 pci, pvr350)
i got it all set up and working except it didnt ask anything about a IR remote.
I thought it was after u select the 686, 586 thing - i selected 686. was that wrong or should i have no selected anything. 686 was the only option other than not selecting one.
and i dont have it hooked up to a TV right now, but i will - probably through svideo from the 5200. am i going to have to edit any files for it to display right or so it wont mess my tv up?
thanks for all the help!!
o yea and its not displaying the right area for the weather news, its in like san diego and im in tampa - i didnt see an option to change the area code, but i am going to search for it right now... sorry in kind of a rush and i just remembered it
thanks again

it is always compiled with lirc support now, so that option is no longer there or needed.

ok but the remote doesnt work.... how do i get it to work?
and im having problems with the sideo out from the 5200. it displays the startup fine on the tv, when its done loading everything it just goes to a black screen. when the svideo is in, it asks me to choose from 7 different display otions with different colors and rows or just press space to continue or wait 30 seconds
whenever i have the monitor in it starts up fine and goes to the mythtv menu.

to fix the question edit lilo.conf change vga=791 to vga=normal for the black screen you will need to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to have vert refresh of 60 if you have any questions on how to do either search the forums both have been cover NUMEROUS times.
Lirc not working search the forums. you may have to tell it to start on boot, but I thought that was fixed in A16, or you may have the new remote there are howto's on that.
