All,

I just performed a fresh install of the lastes knoppmyth. When I tried to access the box from cygwin on windows xp, I could not connect. I tried mythweb, nothing. I tried to just ping the box.

I followed all of the onscreen instructions and everything appears to be ok. I can watch live tv, etc. I tried to manually start sshd, but that doesn't do anything. I can, however, ping the other boxes on my network from the knoppmyth box.

Has anyone had any similar problems or does anyone know what I might try next?

Thanks,
Dan

sshd should work out of the box and with R5A22 MythWeb is on by default, as to why you can't connect that is a mystery.

You say you can ping out from the KnoppMyth box, but can you ping to the KnoppMyth box, there is a difference.

Cygwin will not work straight away as you have to enable X11Forwarding before this will work and then ensure you follow the instructions to get it working.

Try pinging the KnoppMyth box and try http://x.x.x.x, where x.x.x.x is the ip address of your KnoppMyth box.

Girkers,

Thanks for the reply. From the myth box, I can ping all of the other devices on my network, including the windows xp box that I was trying to ssh from. Cygwin is setup to forward X, but I just wanted to test connecting to it by getting a command prompt on knoppmyth. When that failed, I tried MythWeb...same result. Then I just wanted to ping the box and, again, nothing.

The KnoppMyth box can access the internet as well; it successfully downloaded all of the program data from DataDirect. I just can't seem to connect to it through my local network. I see the box listed on my linksys router and the dns name I entered durning setup. I have tried to hit both the dns name and the ip address, my connections just time out.

I am not at all opposed to re-installing, but since I have done that twice now and I end up with the same result.

I previously had a Fedor Core 4 install with MythTV on it and I had no problems ssh'ing into the box. I can only assume it is something with R5A22.

I have tried manually starting ssh, /etc/init.d/ssh, but starting, stopping, and restarting don't give me any results. Also, I can find no reference to it in /var/log/messages.

Please let me know if there is any further information that you would require.

Thanks for your help.

Dan

I don't know if this is related but I know with my router's current firmware that it doesn't by default forward packets across even the local network the firewall is that strict.

the only problem with that theory is that you have had FC4 on the box and was able to connect without issue.

You could try a tracert from the XP box and see how far it is getting:
Code:
tracert x.x.x.x

Give that a go and it may show you where it is falling down.

Girkers,

Thanks for all the input. I think I figured it out. It is an issue of network topology. My Myth Box is hard wired, as is one of my tivo's. My other tivo is uses a wireless nic and the xp box is behind a wireless bridge. For some reason, I cannot connect the hard wired boxes and the wireless bridge. I am a programmer, not a network guy so I am not entirely sure where I am missing the link.

I put another usb wireless nic on my xp box an was able to connect to the mythbox.

If you have any suggestions, please feel free to post them. I would definately be interested in making this work with my existing setup.

Dan
