Hi All, I am tinkering with knoppmyth using an old PIII-800 i had laying around in the hopes of learning how to configure and tweak the settings to suit my Plasma TV and eventually buying some decent hardware to make a PVR. The problem is i have no idea where to start, after searching forums and how to guides i am still none the wiser except for the fact that i think i need to edit the XF86config file and add the modline to get a resolution of 848x480. This is where the newbie part comes in ![]() Sorry to hassle for the most basic of things but i just need a push in the right direction (probably into the deep end) and swim from there. Regards, Michael |

You are probably best working in command line initially. To get to the linux command term. Hit Alt+Ctrl+F1 , login with "root" and password you assinged during install. If you have ever worked with a command line OS should be pretty easy from this point on. The easiest command to edit the file is... Code: nano /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 I would suggest backing up the file before you edit it. Command to copy to a backup file Code: cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.back
Keep in mind linux is case sensetive Here is a good guide if you are new to linux http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=LinuxTips I browsed the WIKI and forums for days looking for guides/posts that detailed directions I wanted to go with knoppmyth. |

Thanks for the push it is all starting to make sense. (been a windows user for to long) "Oh yea, Hit CTRL+ALT+F7 to return to MythTV". reboot did the same thing ![]() Thanks again for your help, now i have the resolution 848x480 in the XF86Config file as well as the XF86Config-4 file (wasn't sure which one to edit as some forums said one and some said the other). How do i now tell the machine to boot into this resolution? do i delete all other possible ones from the config file in the "screen section"? Regards, Michael |

That's what I usually do: I comment out with # any modelines I might want to keep and get rid of all of the rest. Then I only have a single set of depth and mode in the "Display" subsection of the "Screen" section, for instance, Depth 24 and Modes "960x480." That way I know what I'm going to get. |
