All,

I have been really struggling with setting up remote controls. I originally tried the iMon PAD that came with my Silverstone LC10M. I could not reliably get this to work. So I decided to try an ATI Remote Wonder. This doesn't even work at all. I tried doing a complete fresh install and it doesn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From what I can tell the Wonder installs correctly. The logs only show that the /dev/lirc could not be opened. lirc-reconfig.sh appears to set everything up correctly and it starts lircd.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

Thanks,
Dan

by default the remote wonder doesn't even use lirc it is RF using it's own kernel module.

That is true, but during the installation, it prompts me to remove the kernel module and replace it with lirc. I don't have a choice as to whether I want to do this or not. Even when I answer 'no', it still installs lirc any way.

What is the model # on your ATI remote? (on backside label) I have 5000023600 and ran into some issues with lirc which I am 25% though working out.

The kernel drivers did work fine for me but I dislike the kernel drivers as I find lirc is more configurable within a specific application like xine, mplayer and MythTV.

I will submit the model # later, but I can tell you that it is an OEM ATI Remote Wonder.

If the kernel module works, how can I keep the knoppmyth install from forcing lirc to install? I would like to use lirc as well for the same reason, but right now I am just looking to get it working.

With your lirc installation, were you seeing that the lirc_atiusb could not open /dev/lirc?

Also, lsmod does not show the ati_remote module, can I assume correctly that this was replaced with lirc_atiusb?

thanks for your help.

EDIT: Model Number is 5000023600

I installed R5A22 completley then after install hooked up the ATI remote. As long as you don't run /usr/local/bin/lirc-reconfig.sh it used the kernel drivers for me.

For me either but lirc_atiusb does show up, I reconfigured my box for lirc. I too have the OEM remote.

This is lircd.conf file that worked for my remote. I did not go over it thoughly though and verify buttons are correct. I do plan on going over the lircd.conf file, the lircrc file creating button maps for MythTV, Xine, and Mplayer, and finally building a WIKI guide with an image refrence. Similar to this http://mikenet.iwarp.com/MythTV/WinFast_TV_2000_dlx/

Code:
# Please make this file available to others

Thanks for the info. I am going to try a fresh install of R5A26 without the ATI dongle attached.

I would be interested in your results when you get lirc working. Let me know if there is any testing or anything I can do.

Thanks.
Dan

I do have it working with above lircd.conf, I just have to sit down and and compare lircrc, lircd.conf with what is bundled with R5A26 and get everything on the same page. The buttons are named diffrent, lircrc config is lacking, etc. I'll be sure to PM you and post it.

Thanks again for your help.

A re-install with the ATI dongle unplugged did the trick. I did notice, however, that reliability with the remote and the kernel drivers was shaky. After about 10 minutes or so, it would not respond at all. Have you had better reliability with lirc and the ATI remote ?

One other thing...Did you happen to look at what the mythic.tv guys did with the dragon install and the Remote Wonder? This is the what they have configured to work with the krp. I will look through the source to see what the dragon setup installs.

Not sure, here is page detailing buttons. May want to PM Human on that question.

Remote seems fine with lirc, I only mapped a few buttons to test such as arrows and esc. But I played around in menus and music for 10mintues without issues. I do recall something weird happening in R5A16 using the Kernel drivers.

Oh, another way to avoid using the kernel drivers maybe CTRL C out of the lirc reconfig prompt.

I sent him a message.

I wonder if you can't use the Dragon configuration outside of the dragon setup. I still have the issue of getting lirc to recognized the /dev/lirc device once I do come up with a solid configuration.

Is your configuration setup to use the /dev/lirc as is stated in the /etc/lirc/hardware.conf? I wasn't sure if that was correct since it is USB; i would have thought it would have been under /dev/usb somewhere.

After speaking with Human, he pointed me to the krp ati_remote kernel module. I replaced mine with the one from the krp and it worked fine after that. I do have one small issue with the channel up/down sending too many signals, i.e. channel up increases 2 channels.

It appears that the $KRP_DIR environment variable points to the location of the krp specific configuration. Here is the command I used, from Human, to replace my kernel module.

Code:
cp $KRP_DIR/Dragon/ati_remote.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/usb/input/

In case there was an issue, Human advocated backing up the original kernel module, and I concur.

After a quick reboot, the remote work pretty well. I still have to play with the placement of my receiver, since I beleive I am getting some interference from my case or power supply; I had intermittent problems when I wasn't directly facing the receiver.

Appended the knoppmyth ATIremote howto to include instructions for ATI Remote Wonder model #5000023600 (scroll down to "ATI Remote Wonder using LIRC"' section)

Check out ATI Remote_Wonder?.jpg in below link for visual representation of keymappings.
