what the title says. Anyone up for seeing if the 1080i bug has been fixed?
It's not mentioned in the brief change list.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

Release Highlights

* Fixed GeForce 7800 GTX clocking problem that affected 3D performance.
* Added support for NVIDIA SLI. Please see the README for details.
* Added a new utility 'nvidia-xconfig', which is a commandline tool for updating X configuration files.
* Added support for new GeForce 6100, GeForce 6150 and GeForce 7800 GTX 512.
* Added manpages for 'nvidia-xconfig', 'nvidia-settings', and 'nvidia-installer'.
* Made UseEdidFreqs "on" by default; the NVIDIA X driver will use the valid HorizSync and VertRefresh frequency ranges from the EDID whenever possible.
* Added support for Stereo Digital Flat Panels such as the SeeReal and Sharp3D DFPs.
* Added HTML version of the README.
* Added support for static Rotation; see the "Rotate" X config option in the README.
* Improved stability on 64-bit Linux 2.6 kernels.
* Fixed driver installation when SELinux is enabled.

new html readme too. http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linu ... index.html
would be nice if they would post a complete changelog somewhere.

<sigh> I really should be the one to try this. I just hate screwing up a working system, tho, with a driver that probably won't fix anything.

I'll try to get to it this week. I was going to load a broken driver anyway so I could create the stupid report nvidia insists on before they will consider it a "reported bug." I might as well use this one.

We just had some poor beggar who had gotten a 6100 based motherboard and was having the expected difficulties with bleeding edge hardware. I'd suggest getting them to try it, but the problem is that it wasn't someone terribly savvy.

Of course I don't know why we're all standing around gingerly poking this with a long stick like it' a (hopefully) dead lion. Last time I upgraded and downgraded the nvidia drivers, using a modified version of Cecil's script, it was a walk in the park.

Hey if anybody installs the new driver and generates a the nvidia bug report to report the brightness (or lack of) problem, please let me know. I still have not gotten around to doing that and don't know when I will. I tried a couple of times, but always ran into issues before i could get the script run.

Post subject:  Nvidia script

I'm willing to try the new driver out since I don't have my 1080i working anyway. Can someone point me to the afforementioned script? I tried upgrading already, but when I reboot my box the 7174 gets re-installed.

I think this command should stop it reinstalling the old nvidia drivers on boot:

Code:
update-rc.d -f install-nvidia-7174-debian remove

Hey king,

You can do it a couple of ways:
1. D/l the installer from nVidia and install from that
2. {Preferred} D/l the installer from nVidia, copy and modify the KnoppMyth nVidia driver installation script to reflect the new version and then install from that.

Don't forget with either way to:
Code:
update-rc.d -f install-nvidia-7174-debian remove

as per Mad_paddler's post.

The steps needed in outline...

- Download the bundle as above and move it to /usr/src

- Copy and modify the file /usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-7174-debian.sh to make one for 8174. In the copy replace all occurances of 7174 with 8174. This should work:
Code:
sed '/7174/s//8174/g'  </usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-7174-debian.sh \
>/usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-8174-debian.sh
chmod +x /usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-8174-debian.sh

- Disable the boot time reinstall as above

- Run the script that you just created for 8174

Note that this may not get you all the new utility programs mentioned above. This could take more advanced diddling with the script that I'm not going to attempt off the cuff.

OBTW - DO NOT overwrite the original /usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-7174-debian.sh script since that's your recovery path if 8174 is borked.

Follow up. I tried the experiment. I seems to work just fine. Of course I'm only using 800x600 and haven't been stressing it all that heavily...

Beware that the script will blow away your current /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 so make a safe copy before running it. If the X server won't start again afterwards, copy it back.
