I have a very simple dream..

I want to be able to create a pvr for my dish receiver (dish network 2700 ird).

So i bought a tv-capture card, sabrent tv-fm just to find out that this card dont have mpeg-2 encoder chip..

I went to look for a hauppauge but since i live in mexico city is really hard to get one.. after 3 weeks looking for one, i bought a leadtek pvr2000.... big mistake..... this card has a blackbird chip not supported in linux..

i tried the plutohome cd.... another week wasted..

well i settle for a windows pvr.. i download and intstall gbpvr for windows just to find out that my ir transmitter don't work with it.. in linux i can change channels using lirc but in windows winlirc just don't works with my config file..

1 month later i can say..

Dont try to do it if you dont have the right hardware.. double check that you have the right hardware..

Actually i don't know if i want to waste more time tying to make the pvr2000 work under linux.. buy another ir transmitter compatible with grpvr under windows or simpy put a old vcr next to the dish receiver and record everything on tapes..

it has been frustrating, really frustrating and time consuming.

Don't look at it in a negative light. You have learned much and you know more about computers and software than before. Getting a system to work is a badge of honor. All of us have struggled with it at one time or another.

I agree that having the right hardware is best. You can compensate for a card without MPEG2 encoding by having more CPU power. There are ways around most difficulties. Your best bet is to mail-order a PVR card which you know is supported by Linux.

You did not mention KnoppMyth in your message, so I don't know if you have tried it yet or not. It is not a magic bullet, but there is no easier way to get a PVR running that I know of.

Is there no international mail service in Mexico? Why would you buy a card you havn't researched when you could have ordered a card you know to work in linux? You might pay extra for shipping but it is better then paying for somthing that wont even work.

Pluto home uses mythtv but knoppmyth is very different. Have you tried knoppmyth at all?

Try to get any electronics or hardware from the US and you will be charged with 300% of the price.. yes... customs..
