Can anyone tell me what program/command i need to run to change the xwindows video card? I had to swap video cards on my myth box. Now xwindows bombs on boot up.

You need to install the right driver (if it's not already there) and update your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 config file.

If you think that's a really fuzzy answer, you're right. However It could have been worse, I could have suggested that you backup and auto upgrade. ;-)

Without the relevant hardware details that's the best anyone can do for you. We need to know both what your old video card was (as a clue to the drivers you have installed) and what your new video card is (so we can tell you what drivers you need to install). Otherwise we're just playing "Doctor it hurts!"

While this is not my post, I do have a similar situation where I've swapped a problematic GEForce 4 with a Radeon 9000 and am having trouble getting X to start too. Will doing an autoupgrade properly install the ATI driver, or will it try to restore my NVidia XF86Config-4 file in the process of autoupgrading?

It should do fresh hardware detection and configuration. Besides which XF86Config-4 is not something that is normally included in a backup.

Auto Upgrade seems like a pretty radical way to solve this problem however... Kind of like killing flies with a baseball bat...

Whatever works! ;) I've tired of the fight! Besides, I just upgraded a few days ago anyway. Thanks for the tips...

rickyli99, I'm done trying to hijack your thread. My apologies.

Well my original video card was a Rage 128 Pro 16mb card, and the new card (well not quite new) is the onboard intel video cards that the mobo came with. I'm not infront of the computer right now so I can't tell you the exact chipset.

Ooo... I don't think you're going to get good Xv or v4l support with that...

Your best bet is to try the "svga" driver which is already installed. Copy the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.1st file over /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (back this up first), change the "Driver" line in the "Device" section to refer to "svga", make sure that your "HorizSync" and "VertRefresh" ranges are right in the "Monitor" section, and give it a whirl.

BTW - I'm not sure I'd call that an "upgrade". ;-)

Just as a note, this did not work. On the upgrade install all seemed to be going well until the reboot where when the box tried to start up X it outputed a bunch of garbled colored lines. I typed in the root password and noticed a change in the color of the lines on the screen so I can only assume that it did not fail to start X, but what was displayed was all garbage.

I did another Auto Upgrade, this time with the NVidia card installed. I went through the set up. I powered down the system and put the Radeon back in. I booted and it complained about not being able to start X. I install the automatic driver install (ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-i386.run) from ATI's website. It installed a useable X display. Unfortunately, it is at 1024x768 . It looks like the ATI setup added a few things to my existing XF86Config-4 file as it still has some references to Nvidia in it.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to clean up my XF86Config-4 and in doing would let me run at 800x600?
