I am displaying Myth on a 16:9 HDTV at 1080i. (1920x1080) The problem is, due to overscan, and the fact that I am converting from VGA to component via an Audio Authority 9A60, the image loses some overall sharpness, and isn't exactly 1:1 pixel mapping. Video playback and Myth menus (due to their large fonts) look great, but if I drop to my X GUI and try to read the type in my shell or if I try to browse the web via Firefox, the text is small and unreadable. My question is, is there any way to run the X GUI in a lower resolution (i.e. bigger everything) while still utilizing the full 1920x1080 for the Myth GUI? I guess some of my alternative options (if what I'm asking is impossible to do) would be to run X and the menus at a lower resolution. (Good for the GUI, but bad for the Mythfrontend.) The other option would be to keep the 1920x1080 resolution, but change some parameter that would drastically increase the default font size throughout the GUI and any apps launched. (such as a shell or firefox.) I'd appreciate any tips on how to do this, because I'm not sure. Also, if anyone has any idea how to make things a little more readable in the built-in Myth web browser, that would be nice too. How is everyone else dealing with the issue of small text, etc. on their TVs? |

I'm in the same boat. I can't read FireFox, for example. I tinkered with the "physical size" stuff in the X config file, and it helped with the fluxbox menus. But XTerm doesn't seem to pay attention, and I have been unable to select a larger font with the command-line option. I am running the older nVidia driver 7676, and expect/hope that upgrading would help. |

Modify your "Modes" line so that there are multiple resolution choices. Make the first one be the resolution you want to use outside myth and the second one the resolution you want to use in myth (1920x1080). In Mythtv “Utilities/Setup -> Setup->appearance” (R5A30.2) goto the Video mode settings (3rd) screen and select “Separate video modes for GUI and TV playback” . Configure the GUI and the video resolutions to the resolution you want to use (1920x1080). I've included my "modes" line below for reference. Marc Code: SubSection "Display"

In my case, I'd like to have xterm, FireFox, etc., be able to display 1920x1080, but have them use reasonable fonts so that it makes sense. |

Doing it this way, I assume the Myth GUI has to run at the same resolution as the X desktop, correct? Hence I have to lower the res on my Myth GUI to lower the res on X. On a side, note, has anyone figured out how to apply a certain resolution or modeline to a full screen command shell. (like when you hit Ctrl-Alt-F1) Attempting to bring this up, leaves my TV with a scrambled attempt to display 640x480, which it cannot do. I do, however have a working 640x480 modeline that encapsulates a 640x480 display into a 1080i display. This works flawlessly for frozen bubbles, but I can't figure out how to apply it to a full screen shell prompt. |

Incorrect assumption. X will default to the first resolution listed on the "modes line". The myth GUI will use the resolution configured in the setup screen. Playback will be at the resolution indicated in the other field of that same screen. So all 3 can be at different resolutions. Best bet is to look at that setup screen. Marc |
