Anyone had any luck playing WMV9 files in either mplayer or xine under KnoppMyth?

I'm trying to test readyness for HDTV content, and the first stage is to get my hands on some HD content (Thanks Microsoft for your HDTV demos in WMV9 format)

Copied them over to /myth/video, won't play.

on a windows machine:
Convert them to XVID, machine has a bit of a hard time, CPU at 100%
Convert them to MPEG1, same story.
Convert them to MPEG2, much better

I know the Nvidia cards have MPEG-2 hardware decoder support, so I'm trying to convert them into that format without having to take 57 steps?

Any suggestions on either how to play the WMV9 files natively, or better yet, tools, and an example command-line to convert it, at full size, audio intact, to an MPEG-2 or NUV file?

thanks in advance.

i found a demo clip of wm9. It did not work with my outdate codec pac. so i downloaded a newer codec pac. from mplayer's website. go under download, and download the mplayers newest release, and the newest "essentials codec pac". untar the codec pac to /usr/local/lib/codecs. the last directory "codecs" will need to be created. then compile mplayer, and it will automaticly compile with wmv9 codecs (as well as others). I was able to play wm9 and newer real player files once i compiled it.

as far as converting wvm9 to mpeg2.. im not sure about that one.

Thanks for the info.

Part of the question was, is something broken in my install, that KnoppMyth R4V4 _should_ play WMV9 and doesn't? Sounds like not

BTW, here's the WMV9 HDTV samples I was working with: ( I was grabbing all the 1080i 1080p ones)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... wcase.aspx

Robotica is good, short, minimizes download and conversion time to find out if it works.

Lastly, I'd love to see a command-line to convert WMV9 files to MPEG-2 or something else.

You can use 'tmpgenc' on a windows box to convert from wmv to mpeg.

Thanks Dinki, all:

I've been able to do it successfully on windows, was hoping to do the conversion on the Myth box. Anyone have any suggestions for tools / examples to accomplish this?

My primary motivation for the conversion is to get it into a format where I can utilize the hardware MPEG-2 decoding, both to make viewing the content possible and a good framerate, and to lower the CPU usage.

btw, downloading and compiling the newest Mplayer (with Codec pack), and I'm playing the WMV9 files just fine. Oddly, even though I have XvMC working with MythTV, I couldn't get it to compile into mplayer.

No it shouldn't... KnoppMyth doesn't come with any codecs or the ability to play patent encumbered codecs. I don't want some attorney knocking on my front door.
