Sorry for the long post, but this is a strange story...

I installed Knoppmyth R4v3 here running on an Intel Celeron 2.6GHz, MSI Mainboard, 512MB RAM, NVidia GF3 and Leadtekt Winfast TV Card. I built this machine quite some time ago and had quite some Linux installations running on it, RH9, FC1, Gentoo and a Debian unstable/testing mix, all of them went without any strange problems with different Kernles 2.4 and 2.6, with and without graphical boot etc.
Now, after the experimentation phase is over, i decided to re-use it as Mythbackend and frontend for my working room and tried Knoppmyth R4v3.
Installation worked fine, first boot and Myth Setup worked fine too. After the next boot I got the scroll lock and caps lock LEDs blinking. Argh...I did soem research and read mybe the installation CD was defect, so I made a new Cd and installed again. This time it worked perfectly, even after booting the second time. The next day when I wanted to boot it...I got the blinking LEDs again. Out of desperation, I just switched it off. Two hours later I booted again and it started fine, strange...but now I got curious what this might be, as I said, various other installations worked fine on this machine. After switching off and one quite a lot of times I recognized, it does not always hang at the same position in the booting process and booted fine in 1 of about 10 tries. It hung always after entering Runlevel 5. Sometimes i come to the sshd startmessage, sometimes to the apache startmessage, sometimes to mythbackend starting, but most often it broke right after syslogd or klogd. Then I always get a line 'e100 eth0 NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps full duplex' and the LEDs start their show again. so I removed everything from rc5.d except sshd ( I dont have a monitor attached to it, currently I use only ssh and watch the boot via SVideo in on my windows box) and it booted fine for more than 5 tries in a row...by now I know, in 1 of about 10 times it still crashes. Then I began including each of the old rc5.d scripts back again, but always if theres at least one more script, it start crashing again no matter what script I include, each additional script increases the chance of failing more.
So I double checked and did an additional Debian netinst on another partition, this works fine, network, apache, webmin, v4l all working.
Has anyone got any idea what knoppmyth might be doing/loading/running that might cause this boot crashes?

See the topic at http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1383

or you may use the R4V2 version instead of R4V3

I guess the problem is around the frame buffer and some hardware timing.

Hia,
i read this post too, that was why I thought my CD may be defective, but thought this only affects the boot from the installation CD...

But after including vga=normal into my lilo.conf (I have no keyboard attached yet, always have to hook the one from the windwos box up) it now seems to boot reliably, thank you.

Does any body know whether this issue can/will be tracked down in an upcomming version? I still think it is related to something Knoppmyth does as I had already high-res consoles and boot splash screens in the normal debian installation working fine under Kernel 2.4.something.

I have the same symptoms....boots fine sometimes and hangs w/ flashing keyboard LEDs other times. the hangs are not at the same location in the boot process.

Once the machine is up, everythnig seems fine.

more info...dont know if its relevent....

took me 3 attempts to boot the system yesterday. I did notice the the successful boot did a full filesystem scan during the fsch step...

Again, once the system booted it was rock solid.
