I read cecil's suggestions on hardware and ordered the 401 card today. I have one question though, as i have never had a remote lirc is totaly foreign to me. Doest the remote that comes with the model 401 work with lirc?? The reason i ask it that the receiver plugs into the card not the serial port. I dont know if thats a normal thing or not? Anyone have the remote working? side question.. anyone have the FM tuner working?

Yes the remote works with LIRC. As I don't really really care about FM, I've never tried to get it to work.

From my experinece, the remote with the 401 card is the black remote. This is a pretty stripped down remote, and if you look for 'black haupaug' remote you should find helpful informaiton on getting it up and working.

At the moment the fm tuner aspect of the card is not taken advantage of by mythtv. I do not expect that there will be any significant changes in that department, however if you go through the various topics on how to use other software in the various menus, as well as how to create menus, you will find it is possible to run just about any program you might want to run.

'apt-cache search radio' returns quite a few programs that can access the fm tuner, however you may want to play with a couple to see if they perform the tasks you are looking for.

I do not know of any immediate way to schedule recording of radio material, and make playback from within mythtv an option. You may be able to use a variety of apps to build your own scheduling suite, however you very well may run into conflicts with your MythTV usage.

Good luck.

Might I suggest posting a query/suggestion in the myth development mail list over at mythtv.org.

It's been a long time since I've done any programming, and I've never looked at any of the Myth source code, so I'm talking through my hat.

Thinking logically though, almost all of the parts needed to do this are already in the program. It has a way to schedule recordings, and MP3 encoding.

I can imagine adding a forth element to the "Input Connections" section. Besides Tuner, SVideo and Composite, a "Radio" connection with a disabled video input.

I assume that behind the scenes, there is a data table that specifies the frequency of each TV station. Probably internally it would appear as if you had a second set of stations available to you, sort of like you had both cable and satellite.

Would recording radio be as simple as setting up new stations with the frequency set to the radio ranges? Of course there probably is no EPG for radio, so all the recordings would have to be set with manual start and end times.

Just some random musings which others will probably trash.

Ian

i have already done some reading on this, of late... Issac said that myth is designed to be the only program using the capture card, so a seperate program like "Fm tools" doesnt work with myth. He said it will stay that way until someone writes a patch...<and the crowd goes silent> LOL :)
I have been playing with fm tools by command line and as of yet no sound has been uttered by my speakers. I havnt spent that much time on it yet.. its a back burner type thing at this point. Besides there is already work being done on the FM tuner part i believe, just not by the actual DEV's yet. Myth is young it will happen

if i actualy wanted to open myself to flames by puting a feature request it would be for more multi-tasking. You cant listen to music while playing games... burn dvd's while looking at pictures.. with processors that are around today multi-tasking would be a powerful tool. :D
