Ok i got my Hauppauge working and it looks good. My only problem is there is no sound when watching TV. Sound does work on the music section and video..etc.. the setup is using /dev/dsp as its sound device. Is there any "be stupid" checkboxes i missed?? :)

Hauppage 401 tunercard
Gforce4 MX
Soundblaster 5.1

Are you using the patch cable from tuner to soundcard? Line in of soundcard set to record?

ohh i didnt relize that. I used the patch cable from the 401 to the line in on the Sound blaster. If i CRANK WAY UP the volume on the speaker you can hear sound. Its off by a few seconds but its there. the problem is (not only that its off by a few seconds) but the sound doesnt stop when you exit mythfront end???

yes with the 401 you either have to use the patch cable or setup btaudio. if you only have one card the patch cable is probably easiest, as btaudio requires a bit of configuration.

Please check the MythTV docs, I believe there is a mention of this issue in the Troubleshooting section.

Ok...YEAH... its working Thanks all including cecil. The mythdoc helped me out. here was my problem. You must mute your line in, in my case Microphone in. And i set the aumix record setting to microphone in as well i believe that must be done as well. That did it. :D A WORKING DVR!!!!

well yes the problem was that knoppmyth comes with line in as the default capture cause that's what most people use, so you just needed to change mic to the capture device.

Ok I have a couple of issues as well re: the 401. I can get it working, but the sound is off and continues to play after exiting, as posted. I've selected mic as the input. What volume should I set the slider at? This won't address the 2 second delay, but one problem at a time! :)

The other issue is, after I play with xawtv and come back into mythtv, the tuner works fine (less the audio delay), but when I reboot, I lose it and have to do a mythtv-backend restart. I originally installed with a 250 mce and tried to add the 401, so I'm thinking of doing a clean install with the 401 and then adding the 250...any thoughts?

that was the problem i was having...ok here's the fix

use the loop cable from the 401 line out into the Mike/line in input in your sound card.. NOw assuming you chose line in as your input Turn the volume all the way down. This is what causes your sound to be OFF and keep playing when your not watching TV. Both problems are the same problem. Using aumix or alsamixer set the capture to Line in (or Mike whatever you chose) (you set that input to capture by scrolling over to it and hitting the space bar, be sure to save it.). Thats it now both problems are solved. The only way to save the setting perminatly in alsa mixer (so sound works on reboot with changing the settings) is to upgrade the alsa drivers, but be-ware bad things have happened :)

hope that helps

if your sound continues when you stop viewing it means you need to mute the input connection line/mic and if you aren't getting sound after muting, then you probably have the wrong capture setting you need to get the proper line/mic set to be the capture device.

well mostly because that's a rather complicated issue, and not easily fixable, and most of us don't have to worry about it, because our setups work "out of the box" so we don't bother doing all the research and work to learn how to make it save since it's not necessary on our systems. That issue has been discussed numerous times on the forums though with solutions posted a couple of times.

I was using the 4-pin from the card to the motherboard. I thought that was what I was supposed to do! Thanks guys.

Any ideas of why I'd have to do a mythtv-backend restart to be able to watch tv? Once I do that, the picture is fine (as it is in xawtv), but upon reboot, I get a garbled picture again.
