$15 bucks for the first 3 monthly and the hope that they can get it down to $20 for a year is chump change. When Zap2it announced that they would stop providing listings, the developers stepped up. They could have simple said forget it... Let MythTV die in the US or have someone else come up with a solution.

The Schedules Direct folks aren't asking for an unreasonable amount of money. The only possible issue I can see is that you must use PayPal. However the reasoning behind this is one of speed. Remember, Sept 1st is a hard deadline. The amount of work that has been done to get to this stage is exceptional! The devs should be commended. Instead, people want to bitch about 5 bucks a month. How much does that cup of coffee cost?

When I have the time, I'll start a thread on cost cutting measures to consider.

Hi,

PayPal & I don't get along well.. Will there be a po box to mail a check / mo to as an option?

I think the dev's deserve a super "atta boy" for all the effort they have given.

From what I have been reading is at first P@yPal is the only method of payment as it can be set up quickly. Later on other methods may be available...
But, sending in a check or MO is unlikely. Handling them could take a large amount of time away from development. And paying someone to do it would increase costs.

I don't care for P@yPal myself. And I don't remember where I saw this suggested. But, I am looking at using a prepaid VISA card and a temporary email address to give to P@yPal. My bank sells prepaid VISA's in any amount for $3.00.

Excellent hint. I'll probably end up doing this myself. PayPal was the poison pill for me too. I'm still not happy about supporting their unsavory busimess practices or having any of my money end up in their pockets, but at least using a throw away prepaid credit card and a throw away spam trap email address limits the issues...

Hi,

I understand all the extra handling and the need for a po box but was thinking of just the first time which is proposed to be a three month thing. After that dust settles the gentlemen putting all the extra effort into the project would have a better idea of what would work for all.

Maybe a poll?

Mike

If you have a Bank of America CC you can also Create a ShopSafe account number through there web site.

basically it's a temp cc with the limit you request. You can set it up in a few seconds.

Looks like Comcast and Verizon are trying to help the EasyData direct service become even more appealing by raising their DVR rates.

This may sound weird --

I'd be willing to be a payment intermediary if you'd like to send me a personal check. I'd deposit the check, make the payment to SD, and forward you the reg. info. via email.

I realize there's a bit of work on my part, and trust on your part involved here - but I'm already deep in bed with PayPal and understand why you'd be reluctant to dirty yourself if you're still a PayPal virgin.

Does that make life any easier for you? I assume that SD will eventually take payment directly, so it's a short-time commitment for me (I hope).

SD has updated the page again. If you chose to signup for their announcements it comes in your email
They have posted Terms of Agreement and a few other choices.

It does say they will be setting up Google checkout in addition to the Paypal service.

According to http://www.schedulesdirect.org/sagreement :
Quote:
You shall not ... make or archive copies of Licensed Data

So does this mean mythbackup violates the SchedulesDirect license? It makes a backup of mythconverg, which contains the schedule data.

I'm not reading that much into it...

I get paranoid about legalese that might be able to become a stick with which to hit people, who, in this case, would be every KnoppMyth user who ever upgraded. :)

I did send them a note to ask for clarification of this situation. It seems that their main requirements are to limit the data falling into someone else's hands, so I really don't think doing a backup should violate the TOS, since mythbackup isn't meant as a means to give your data to someone else.

Even before we get to backups I can think of a half dozen things that happen in the course of normal operations that involve "making copies" or "archiving" the data. Even just loading into your DB is "making a copy" and "archiving" the data after all, and when you keep recordings with their meta data for any length of time that's really archival.

It sounds like it was written by a lawyer who didn't quite understand those magical computer things or a computer person who didn't understand just how painfully clear and unambiguous legalese needs to be...

That's probably it. I once had a Verizon Wireless AirCard, a cellular internet PCMCIA card, and the TOS basically said I wasn't allowed to use it to connect to other machines. An internet of one :)
