Post subject:  KnoppMyth repository: update via apt-get

Hardware support for MythTV is constantly evolving. Has any thought been given to some kind of centralized KnoppMyth apt-get repository. This might be a good way to help people keep up to date with the various drivers (ALSA, ivtv) etc... It would also help limit questions from n00bs like me. It appears that there is always an extended delay between when certain solution are part of the community knowledge and when these solutions are easily available to new users. The most common answer to posts is always something like 'check the archives, this has been addressed".

If something like this exists already. Please let me know.

Post subject:  apt-get upgrade or apt-get dist-upgrade

It is pretty clear in the documentation and searching this forum that

apt-get upgrade

or

apt-get dist-upgrade

is a sure-fire means to mess up your KnoppMyth box. see link below

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... et+upgrade

However, I am curious as to what CAN be upgraded via apt-get without causing a messed up system.

Is there a way to use apt-get safely by specifying certain packages NOT to update? I know you can use apt-get to install certain packages relatively safely (ie, I did a apt-get install mozilla and it worked OK) but how do you know when a package or a dependency is going to mess up KnoppMyth?

Is there a list of "never touch these packages" for KnoppMyth posted someplace?

THANKS! I love KnoppMyth!
