I have had lots of problems upgrading the KnoppMyth system to be 2.6 compatible. Here is what I have done: 1) Downloaded linux-2.6.3.tar.bz2 Eventually got it working (I am using a Compaq SFF EF with a PIII500) 2) Upgraded module-init-tools (so that I could do lsmod, modprobe, et c.) 3) Found out that MySQL doesn't seem to be running any more 4) Gave up. It is good that KnoppMyth installs a compiler, but if I have to rebuild MySQL as well as the kernel and MythTV (because I am trying to get DVB working) then I am going to need a bigger hard disk. Has anyone else had better luck? |

I have 2.6.4 kind of up and running. I still havn't sorted out the move from modules.conf to modprobe.conf but everyhting is working. Check my post under the knoppmyth and DVB thread |

move from modules.conf to modprobe.conf? what's this? I have 2.6.4 on my debian desktop and I don't have a modprobe.conf. |

I had read that the module.conf was now out of fashion in 2.6, and that you should configure the modprobe.conf file instead. I assumed that was why modules were being loaded in my upgrade, but not properly configured. I have updated a standard knoppmyth install to 2.6 using Apt-get, to get DVB working. Although bttv was being loaded, the pll=1 that I needed was not beng passed from modules.conf. A number of upgrade docs I googled for suggested that a script could be run to build a modprobe.conf to replace the module.conf. http://www.gidforums.com/t-1990.html is an example |

Ok you know actually I hadn't ever seen that, I only have one module that needs options and it wasn't loading properly, but I haven't been using that device for a while and just didn't worry about it, and just the other day I started working on it again and found out that I could modprobe and it wouldn't work, but I could insmod and it would. Anyways prompted by your link I did some research and heres the modprobe the debian way. For 2.6 kernels the modprobe.conf file resides in /lib/modules to modify it you need to alter files in /etc/modprobe.d/ and run update-modules. Basically it's the same thing as the old way modify files in /etc/modutils/ and run update-modules. Hopefully you can folow that if not and you have more specific questions let me know. |

Any idea if a straight copy of the /etc/modutils contents to /etc/modprobe.d will do the trick ? I thought that some changes in syntax were needed ? |
