well first you should not need rpm installed on a debian based system. what you use is alien to convert the rpm package to a .deb package and install that. But of course the best bet is to find a debian package if available. What are you trying to install that is rpm only?

using rpm's shouldn't hurt anything, almost the same thing as a deb

as for using apt-get you might want to try apt-cache search rpm to search for the correct naming of the rpm package

ROFL i have been so intent on installing RPM, cause it wasnt there that i have forgotten the original reason i needed rpm installed. Im sure there was some package i wanted!!

On a somewhat releated note all these distro are leaving my headed spinning! started getting used to Rpm.... (redhat) Then i moved to mandrake and sorta got used to urpm.. and now im using apt-get and were talking about .deb packages.... i cant figure out why people are scared of linux  anyway what is the command for install debs?
also alien is a command to roll rpm's into debs.. thats good to know.

Thanks to turkish for

well most debian packages are installed directly from the web with apt-get, but if for some reason the package doesn't have a repository then you use dpkg -i

You're probably referring to Axel's RPMs for Fedora. Either install Fedora to use those RPMS or install CVS from source on KnoppMyth. Just in case you're wondering, I won't be releasing CVS debs...
