I have been trying to get Autofs to work on my current Knoppmyth box, but no luck so far. After following the Wiki I can not seem to get it right, but I dont get any errors in the terminal when I start it ether. My question is where is the log file that I should be looking at to see whats going on?

Thanks!

See the general guidelines on what files contain what messages here: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CheckingLogFiles

An old trick is to simply do an ls -trla /var/log before and after the thing you're looking for logs on. This isn't 100% because sometimes things are in subdirectories like /var/log/mysql or /var/log/mythtv but it's a pretty good first cut.

Try grep mount /var/log/*

this will search through all files in /var/log and spit out any lines that contain the word "mount". Learn grep, it's your friend.

A quick search on my box brings up a automount failure in /var/log/syslog.

Hope that helps...

Thank you! I found this.

/var/log/daemon.log.0:Mar 17 17:57:52 mythtv automount[16932]: lookup(yp): map auto.smba.mnt: Local domain name not set

So I opened webmin and went to samba and checked, the workgroup name was set. So am I on the wrong track here?

ok so you're trying to mount a samba share - that's important information. :) in the future more specifics will enable people to give you more assistance.

so have you tried mounting the samba shares manually yet w/ smbmount? This command should take the same syntax as that listed in your auto.mnt file, so if smbmount works then you know your auto.mnt file is probably cool. If not, then you need to get samba going before using autofs to mount it.
