This is a known issue. Go to the Linux -> MythTV forum and read the sticky at the top. The fixes involved are interim, as the problem is going to be resolved with an update to mythtv 0.15 which should be released this week.

And where exacly is the "Linux ->MythTV forum". There is no forum by that name at "mysegttopbox.tv"

If the forum you mentioned is at a different website, it would be soooo helpful to include its name. The complete URL of the actual posting would be even more usefull.

As a brand new MythTV user (just installed it tonight), with tons of computer experience but NO Linux experience, I hope the instructions are detailed and complete. If not, I'll have to wait for KnoppMyth v 5 which will presumably fix this problem.

OK, boys and gorrillas, based on his profile graysky has been here long enough that he should know this but ALWAYS SEARCH THE FORUMS FIRST! If someone tells you that it's a sticky post, that's even easier since they're always at that top of the corresponding topic list. A quick search for mythfilldatabase and it's at the top of the list and marked sticky...

Oh and ChapmanI, it's exactly where Rusty said it was. On the top level forum screen there are 4 topic groupings "KnoppMyth", "Hardware Recommendations", "Linux" and "Off Topic". Under the "Linux" one there are three subtopics "General", Installation", and (drum roll please...) "MythTV". Linux -> MythTV is a fairly conventional way of describing such menu/submenu relationships...

well I don't know what forums you are looking at at mysettopbox.tv, but when I look at the forums I see four main headings which are knoppmyth, hardware recommendations, linux, and off topic. If I look under linux I see general, instillation, and mythtv, so I would say linux -> MythTV is an appropriate description.

Oh my. How silly of me. I missed that.

In the KnoppMyth forums, after doing a brand new fresh install, and finding it didn't work, I looking in KnoppMyth Installation, KnoppMyth Problems and Solutions, KnoppMyth Announcements, KnoppMyth Usage/How To, KnoppMyth Hints and Tips, and finally KnoppMyth General.

At that point I'd only worked on it for about 2 hours. I didn't think to scroll down. I didn't see the Linux section, or the MythTV subcategory.

Of course since I was on the KnoppMyth website, in the KnoppMyth forums, and working on a KnoppMyth installation, I should have definitely thought of looking for a Generic Linux category to find a solution.

If I sound a little snide, perhaps that's because I've worked on this for 14 hours straight now, but still don't have a working installation. I'm just a little tired and frustrated.

Yes I now realize that this problem affected all North American users of MythTV, so the Generic Linux MythTV category is appropriate. It was off the bottom of my screen, and I didn't see it, and I didn't think of looking for it. I misinterpreted the reference as being in the forums from the MythTV.org website.

Apologies to all (and to myself) for looking like a jerk.

I searched the forums for zap2it but didn't unearth anything, so here is a related question: since we all are required to register with the zap2it labs with a project code that expires in 3 months, does that imply that each of us will have to pay a monthly fee to zap2it for this service in the future?

This was mentioned in the myth-user mailing list, but I have not seen it here yet.

The last I read, you will be able to renew your subscription for free at zap2it by filling out another of the survey's that you filled out this last time.

What follows is purely speculation.

I do not know if Zap2it is considering any other subscription ideas at this time. They very well may be willing to offer the service at their cost for a single user, or slightly more to deal with the administrative costs of keeping track of an account that downloads a 3-10 meg file daily. That amount may be as little as $10 a year, or may be as high as $10 a month. In the future you may also be able to sign up for a lifetime subscription. I would presume that would be in the neighborhood of $200, or $299.

I would hope that if they do go to such a model, that they continue the free with a survey option for people who are trying this out, or just don't want to go to a pay subscription model.

The prices I speculate about seem to me to be a reasonable range. I suspect that several people would consider the numbers to be rather high, and might start looking for alternative ways of getting programing information however. I can even see someone building a screen scaper for Yahoo, though I would not be the one to do that.

Over at the labs.zap2it.com forums:
http://bb.labs.zap2it.com/viewtopic.php?t=21
In the "FAQ about the Website" section, under the "How can I extend my subscription after 3 months?" topic, I found this post from Tom, identified as the Zap2it Labs forum and customer service manager:

Are there any plans to have a pay type service that won't expire? Say if we pay $5 per year or $10 per year or something like that. I would be willing to pay a fee around there per year (per month isn't worth it) to not have the service expire.

We don't currently have any plans to implement a pay model for Zap2it Labs.

That's good news!
