Post subject:  Backend Error on Halt
I am getting the following garbage when telling my backend to halt (R5D1):

I found this where someone else had the same problem with R5D1. The solution was to remove the module before shutting down.
Do you have a spare HDD that you can try installing R5F1 to see if this problem is eliminated?

Ah, it's the old ALSA problem with my HD5500... Oh well, I'll probably upgrade to R5F1 at some point, I'll just deal with it until then. I just haven't upgraded yet because I'm afraid since the new versions aren't using X11...
I want to make sure my HDTV works well with R5F1 before I upgrade. (I'll have to upgrade 3 boxes, too.)

Where on earth did you get that (very mistaken) idea? :shock: Cecil chnaged from the XF86 server to the xorg server. Both are X11 implementations.

Oh, thanks for the clarification tjc.

Maybe you can make me feel better? Here are my concerns:
1. I have an HDTV and it was difficult getting the right XF86Config modeline that worked well with my widescreen HDTV. Since I will need an xorg.conf that I assume is different than XF86Config I am afraid that getting my TV looking right could be an issue. Is this a baseless fear?

2. I am using an modified version of MythCenter-Wide. I made the modifications myself. Will these modifications work with xorg?

3. When my frontend locks up on my wife I am able to ssh home from work and restart the frontend for her by executing a X11 restart: /etc/init.d/gdm restart. Can I still do this in the new versions?

I always fear upgrades because I have 3 machines to upgrade (1 backend and 2 frontends. Although, this week may be a good time to get an upgrade done because my wife is out of town and she can't complain about not being able to use the TV...

See the R5F1 hints which tell you how to do the surgery. Basically just grab the mode lines from your XF86Config and paste them into the "Monitor" section of your xorg.conf then make any adjustments needed in the "Screen" section so that they get used. It's pretty much just simple name matching.

Yes. You'll (obviously) need to back up and restore the affected files. This is what the supplemental backup and restore lists are for.

No. But the R5F1 hints contain the directions for the current method of doing the same thing.

Please, _read the hints_. They cover all of this and much more.
