That poll doesn't match what I'd like. ;)
Mplayer for videos, Xine for dvd's.

I resort to xine for DVDs because of it's menu support, but the interface inconsistencies between it and the rest of the system can be fairly annoying.

I totaly agree with tjc/daveM Mplayer is great for avi's and such..but xine is light years better for dvd's I cant even watch my ghostbusters 1 dvd because mplayer doesnt know which chapter to start on. But xine works perfect. =) So my vote is a loud BOTH.. :D

I agree with the other posts. Both have their benefits, and both are necessary.

Xine is better for DVDs because it contains menu support.

My vote is for both.

I was running Ogle for DVD and Mplayer for everything else, but after getting Xine working I'd definatly like to see the Mplayer/Xine combo be the default for R5.

Agreed. I voted for Xine, but I'm currently setup with Xine for DVD and MPlayer for videos

Oh my, over in this tangentially related thread, http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=7988 Xsecrets corrects my misapprehesion about what exactly mplayer is used for... Guess I don't see a need for both after all...

well even at that most people prefer mplayer for the video section, the one where you play your avi and mpg files, however like the menu support that xine offers for the dvd section. I must admit that my system is set up this way too.

I voted for mplayer even for DVD playback; although it has no menus, the playback is nice and smooth. I tried xine and ogle and both stuttered every few seconds during playback. Haven't tried these since I updated my Shuttle BIOS, though, so maybe it's time to try again.

The problem is that mplayer just plain doesn't work for almost every DVD I've tried to play with it. On the other hand xine plays everything I've thrown at it so far.

hmmm odd I've never encountered a dvd that mplayer won't play, it just doesn't have menu support, and I have had a few odd issues with the audio tracks, but that's rare.
