After fiddling (and reinstalling knoppmyth) i have TV via my composite input quite happily on my mythbox, however here is the rub as the video is coming into my capture card (Winfast DTV1000T) but the sound is going directly into my onboard sound card the sound and video are out of sync, id say at a guess the sound video is lagging by about a second. Also the sound from my cable box is always on (its plugged into the line in socket on the sound card). Can anyone suggest any remedies for these ailments?

This is one of the oldest FAQs in the book, but not one we see all that often anymore.

The problems is that you're listening to the raw sound (which is more or less real time) and watching the recorded video (which is delayed by a couple seconds). You need to use alsamixer to mute the input that you're using to record and only playback the sound from the recording. Searching for the words in blue (require all!) will get you more details.

Hmm, i looked into your suggestion and while it shuts up the audio from playing constantly i no have no audio at all when watching TV. Ill try to expand on the problem.

So my Sky TV box has a scart output. I have one of those little adapters which splits the scart signal into a video signal and an audio right and audio left signal. Now the video signal is plugged into my Winfast DTV1000T capture card (this is recieving video only, no sound at all). The audio cables are plugged into my onboard sound card. So i need to somehow delay the sound from the sound card by a specific amount of time to ensure it is in time with the video.

Which means you need to un-mute and dial up the volume on the appropriate internal source so that you're playing back the sound from the recording. This is usually something like "PCM", although I also had to do this for something labeled "IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA".

In more unusual cases you may need to fuss with the TV settings (especially general and playback) and try thing like "Use audio as timebase", but make sure you understand your audio input and output streams first.
