Does anyone know how involved it will be to transition from Zap2it to the new Schedules Direct format?

I'm hoping I can just edit a config file and be done with it, but I doubt it's going to be that easy...

If they manage to do an identical simulation to DataDirect, in theory all you would have to do is point it at a new host. This could be done with an entry in /etc/hosts that replaces the datadirect hostname(s) with the schedulesdirect hostname.

I suspect something might change with it, in which case I would guess that there would have to be two changes:

1. The binary or binaries affected that know the URL/hostnames involved

and possibly

2. Changes to the database configuration that read the DataDirect username/password options for logging in.

I'm hoping there will be a nice simple patching thread here - I have a lot of neat customizations I've added to my R5F1 basic install that I'd love to keep.

I too, am very nervous about making the transition On the one hand Schedules Direct says they have a working grabber. On the other hand we only have about 3 weeks to go from vaporware to KM-integration and installation.

I suspect it should be pretty easy to drop in the new grabber, and maybe a new mythfilldatabase, If it's much more than that I'm sure there will be some very detailed instructions posted to a sticky here in the forum once the details trickle-down From SD to Myth TV to KM.

KM, and this Forum, have earned my trust, and are the ONLY reason I'm not in a total panic over this change. So Everyone approaching Freak Out stage repeat after me:
It's going to be OK; I trust the KM Forum.
It's going to be OK; I trust the KM Forum.
It's going to be OK; I trust the KM Forum.

I have a good feeling that Cecil and Dale will get the patches BEFORE they're released to the public, just to ensure that there will be a smooth transition. They may actually have them NOW... you never know. ;)

Since the KnoppMyth distro has all of the binaries, I figure it'll just be a matter of DL'ing and replacing a few files on running systems. After that patch is done, I figure that there will be a pending new release of KnoppMyth that ties everything together for the newbies.

You think? I know they create this package I love called KnoppMyth, but I was unaware that they had a special relationship with the MythTV guys...

Update:
Even more interesting:
The Zap2it Labs page has been updated with this message:
Quote:
August 9, 2007

Zap2it Labs received many emails inquiring if television listings could be provided on a paid for basis once the current service is discontinued. Today we are pleased to announce an agreement that will allow for many of you to continue to have access to your personal television listings data.

In collaboration with Schedules Direct, a non-profit organization created by founding members of MythTV and XMLTV, an agreement has been reached that will continue to support the open source and "freeware" communities. As of September 1, 2007, there WILL BE an alternative television listings source for certain Zap2it Labs users who become members of Schedules Direct, which includes a membership fee.

While Schedules Direct will continue to support the open source community and the users of "freeware", it will not support users of "commercial" products, such as DVRs, that were purchased from either a retail outlet or a company that used Zap2it Labs as its television listings source.

For those of you who lived by the original spirit and intent of Zap2it Labs and wish to continue to have access to listings, we encourage you to visit Schedules Direct for more information at http://www.schedulesdirect.org

So, it looks like the Zap2it Labs guys have been working with the Schedules Direct guys. This makes me feel better...

The Myth Dev team has been saying that all along.

Does anyone know of any actual commercial services that are feeling the pinch? I'd kinda like to know who spoiled it for the rest of us. I just thought "Commercial misuse" was an excuse for TMS to drop Zap2it.

There is no special relationship between the KM guys and the MythTV devs. We have no special information at this time. Expect a new release before month's end.

In my mind, if Zap2it shuts down Sept 1st, I'd still expect guide data until the 12th from Zap2it.

I'd expect the change to be:
1)Signup and setup with SD.
2)Delete source in mythtv-setup.
3)Create new source (link'd to SD account).
4)Bind source to input.

That is that. Note, the about is simply what I think the process will be...

I know the replaytv unit had users using a windows package called WiRNS to get zap2it information onto their replaytvs simply because zap2it was able to provide more data than the stock replaytv units that used DNNA.

No problem... R5F1 is so stable and problem free imo, I can wait a bit longer. :)

I'm a bit worried... as I see my guide data now only up to September 1, and that's now 12 days out (I would usually have 13 days). My suspicion is that Zap2It guide data will simply end on 9/1. This is scary. I suppose I should be happy I have the backup Tivo Series 3 in my bedroom.

I'm surprised that Zap2It's demise is not being discussed and worried about more. It looks like SchedulesDirect has signed up their first bunch of folks as well.
