Well, this is a bit of a weird one...

Not sure what's happening, exactly. On occasion, my backend/frontend combo box will become unresponsive to any and all keyboard activity. The screen will be frozen at some MythTV menu--never seen this happen during LiveTV or when watching a recording.

Interestingly enough, I can ssh into the box from another and it's still running--in fact, I still can logon to the Mythweb pages and verify things are OK.

Recordings and jobs continue to process.., but I can't actually do anything at the machine itself--not even switch to a different console via ctrl-alt-f1 etc.

If I issue a reboot command from remote ssh shell the box will shutdown and reboot without issue, and seems just fine after that--it's back to normal.

This has happened a couple times now--at first I thought it was a fluke, but now I'm a bit curious as to what it might be.

No hardware or software changes recently, and it's definitely not overheating.

Any tips on where I should start to look for possible issues?

Thanks in advance!

From your description it sounds like the OS and the backend are OK, and it's only the GUI that is locked up.

If it happens again and you can ssh in, try just killing the X server and see if it comes back without a full reboot.

Hi, tjc,

What's the command I would need to use for that?

killall xinit ?

Wasn't sure--tried some stuff from an older post here and it didn't seem to work...

Thanks!

I usually use pkill for stuff like this. See the R5F27 Hints for more details.

I've noticed the same thing on my box. It has just started in the last month or so. The frontend on the combo box is frozen but everything else is running as it should. I haven't made any changes....

Any ideas?

I have a frontend only machine (old Compaq Evo P4 1.6 + Gforce5200 - no Xvmc) that sometimes exhibit a similar behaviour.

Apparently mythfrontend stop receiveing keyboard and ATI remote commands while playing livetv or a recording bu playback continues regularly; it just can't be stopped or controlled.

I can regain control of the machine by CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE that restart X.

I second this. It only happens on my remote FE. The master BE does not see the same behavior. When it happens I simply do a ctrl-alt-bksp and I am back up and running. Hoping that the next release corrects it :)

Is it just the keyboard that's unresponsive or the remote too? If just the keyboard, who cares? I hardly use mine. If the remote have you tried adding "options ivtv-fb osd_compat=1" to /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv? Worked for my remote.

Well in my case the front end hangs so neither the remote or keyboard commands work other than killing the XServer. I suspect that the problem is that the frontend has become unresponsive.
