I would like to suggest that KnoppMyth add some kind of (para)virtualization to allow the system to do other things without affecting the all important functions of KnoppMyth. Yes, I know there's a folding@home process running, but I also have other uses I would like to add in isolation. rcpao |

Just from a support stand point I'd be kind of nervous about adding unneeded complications... |

KnoppMyth is an Appliance. Other than ssh'ing in to edit configs or move files around, leave it be. I use other desktop/laptop systems for my work. They're much SLOWER than my KnoppBoxen, but I use up most of that horsepower for transcoding and Folding@Home. Occasionally, I wish that I could use an X utility at times, but I usually learn how to do the same from the command line. Let's keep KnoppMyth the Lean, Mean, Myth Media Machine!

Sorry, but no matter the out come of this vote KnoppMyth won't support virtualization out the box. |

Like Cecil said, it ain't going to happen. Many reasons, but having just spent the past month researching it, it isn't easy even if you have just a single system to build. You're also always going to want some feature that's not in the one you've installed. If you really, really want this, I'd suggest: 1. Use Xen: It's able to do 64 bit stuff at ~100%, paravirtualising other 64 bit linuxes 2. Roll your own distro. Why not? Citrix do it, and their efforts produced Xen 3.1 pre-installed on Centos. They sell this for quite a lot of money (after renaming it 4.1) Good luck Mike |

If someone knows what virtualization is, and knows they want it, I'm sure they're competent enough to install it themselves

I agree. Do you really need to run KnoppMyth in isolation or just those other processes? Personnally, I have VirtualBox running on my KM box, but I believe that VMWare is just as easy to install. It was so easy that I don't even remember which way I installed it. Go to virtualbox.de and download / install the debian package or find the line to add to /etc/apt/sources.list and "apt-get update" "apt-get install virtualbox". VirtualBox has RDP (remote desktop protocol) built in. (VirtualBox OSE doesn't). |

I tend to agree, however might be reasonable request to include the standard KVM support provided in the kernel - ie when Cecil builds the kernel the KVM option is left in for those with cpu's that can take advantage of it. Not having researched this fully I am assuming this is a simple kernel configuration option. This would be a low cost compromise - anything more is a distraction. It would then be up to individuals to add virtual machine support themselves. I have found it to be relatively easy to get QEMU working on top of KnoppMyth (at least it seemed easy after the effort it took to get it working on a Windows host). I will do a wiki entry when I have gone through the process a few more times to be sure I have captured all the required steps. Malcolm |
