Hi Martian, thanks for writing up the guide!

I figured after striking out with firefox 2, 3, and 3.1 i'd give iceweasel a try. It installed fine, but I have the same issue with flash video fullscreen just showing a black screen with audio. I'm thinking maybe it's a driver issue or something. Now to read up on nvidia driver updates!

Aha! it must be an issue with the legacy nvidia driver i was using. Even the latest recomended one from nvidia had the problem, but it was fixed by installing a dev version of the driver. NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.09-pkg1.run

I guessed the url of the driver, so i hope nothing explodes, but for now it seems to be working better! :)

Hey Martian,

What version of KM are you running? I'm always hesitant to use apt to install anything when it's going to upgrade or remove packages. I am using R5F27 btw.

Sorry about that. I thought I had mentioned it.

Presently I'm running KnoppMyth R5.5. I also added that info to my original post.

Cheers,

Martian

Thanks for the update. I guess I'll be waiting for the moment, then. Have you looked into boxee at all?

I'd never heard of Boxee (wiki to the rescue). Looks interesting but the alpha status is more than enough to scare me away.

Hi,

Don't be scared with the Alpha status. It's really stable and there is very often update.

It's a great Knoppmyth extension.

Don't want to take this thread too far OT, but could someone familiar with boxee create a thread (or link one). I'm interesting in it's usefulness on a KM setup. Seems like it could bring a lot of online content to my TV. It also seems like it could step on what mythtv already accomplishes too.

TIA

Martin, I'm running R5.5 and I started to give you instructions a try but I noticed that the apt-get of iceweasel causes quite a few packages to get upgraded. Before I go forward I wanted to double-check that this list looks reasonable / consistent with your experience -- I don't want to run the risk of hosing my installation. Thanks for your help!

Marc

Code:
root@mythhd:/etc/apt# apt-get install -s iceweasel | more
Reading package lists...
Building dependency tree...
The following extra packages will be installed:
  apt apt-utils aptitude dpkg libcairo2 libcairo2-dev libcwidget3

Most of those packages look safe enough to me, but as always, make sure that you've got a current backup in case you need to revert the hard way...

Subsequent to my previous post I downloaded the latest firefox tarball. I successfully untar'ed it in a directory I created, downloaded the latest flash player and installed that with its installation script. I can play shows from Hulu, but when I go to full screen mode, things freeze up and I need to "kill -9" the firefox processes. Suggestions / ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

Marc

I saw the same thing until I disabled hardware acceleration. Go to a page with a flash video and right click on the video. Look through the options to disable hardware acceleration.

Britney, thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to make any changes to the settings. While a flash video is playing I right-click and choose "settings". A dialogue box pops up that includes the "hardware acceleration" option, but the dialogue box will not respond to any of my mouse clicks. I also cannot get that dialogue box to go close or go away -- it sits there on top of the video no matter what I do until I kill the firefox browser windows and restart it.

Any thoughts?

Marc
