I recently rebooted my Master backend/front end machine and now I'm getting this error.

tftpd-hpa disabled in /etc/default/tftpd-hpa
Knoppmyth kernel panic - not synching: Attempted to kill init!

I tried looking at the wiki for recovery option. I can runt he Install Disk as a Rescue CD, but I'm confused as to the root of the issue here.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I can post any files etc as necessary. I've done many a search, but I'm still confused as how to properly fix this to get my machine back up.

Note: I was going to try to network boot my front end in the past (not recently), but I couldn’t get it to work, so I don’t currently need tftpd to run (I think)

TIA.

A kernel panic at this stage in the boot process sounds like hard drive corruption to me. I would start by booting with a rescue CD and running the appropriate fsck in "safe" mode - that is, running fsck and looking for errors only, not fixing them.

Feel free to report back if you need further guidance (or if you need help with the appropriate command line; the type of file system for your root partition would be helpful). There may be other issues that I'm not thinking of, but my instinct tells me this is hard drive corruption.

Well, I'm not sure this is right, but here's my fdisk and fsck outputs

fdisk -l
Disk /dev/hda: 123.5 GB, 123522416640 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15017 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 609 4891761 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 610 853 1959930 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda3 854 15017 113772330 83 Linux

fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
[/sbin/fsck.ext3 (1) -- /media/hda1] fsck.ext3 /dev/hda1

It's harder to get output from when booting from the install disk.

I tried to start ssh, but I get Could not load key. It'll start samba, but I can't seem to access the shares. I was only able to get the output by installing doing redirecting the output and ftp-ing it myself.

So, anyway my system is ext3 which is the default I think.

I guess that kernel panic means the superblock is messed up? Maybe? I'm confused on how to troubleshoot this futher. TIA.
