I have been thinking about implementing the acpi/mythwelcome auto startup/shutdown for recordings on my mythbox. To me there seems to be a fundamental flaw with the whole process.

What if you want to watch TV after it has already shutdown because it's idle?

I have a combined backend/frontend, but the problem would be the same if you had a dedicated backend with remote frontends. This would obliterate the WAF. In my opinion, it would be much better (albeit impractical) if you could suspend instead of shutdown and then resume by pressing a button on the remote. If anybody has this solution I would be glad to hear it.

Back to the point. This process seems to work great for anyone who never plans to watch anything they've recorded or doesn't mind waiting for the mythbox to startup from a cold boot. In my specific case, TV use is generally 6:30-8:00 am, 12:00-1:00 pm, 3:30-?? pm.

So long story short... Would it be possible to modify the acpi/mythwelcome to:
1) Shutdown only after 9:00 pm if it has been idle on weeknights (maybe a different schedule for weekends)
2) Startup to record anything between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am
3) Startup automatically at 6:00 am every weekday (maybe a different schedule for weekends)

Also, how does this affect mythfilldatabase? Will it wake up to do that or does it just skip it? Will it find a time to run when the mythbox is on?

Thanks in advance for the info!

See the mythtv wiki

You can set mythwelcome to wakeup for certain time periods everyday. I have mine set to be awake from 6pm to 9:30pm everyday, as these are the times I usually watch stuff.

It doesn't differentiate between weekdays and weekends.

THe other thing is, when you are just at home and might go to watch tv at any time, you just don't exit from the frontend. Most of the time I'll have the frontend running when I'm at home. I only exit to MythWelcome when I go out or go to bed. I don't have a daily wakeup period but it's always awake when I get home from work because I have it set to record the 6:00 news every evening, which is just before I get home.

The link was helpful Turpie. I had my blinders on, only checking the forums and KM wiki. I'll try to add some of the screenshots from the mythwelcome menu and information popups to the KM wiki.

Hopefully nobody else was avoiding the setting up the mythwelcome/acpi shutdown/startup because they were ignorant like me
