I just updated to the testing repositories in order to get VDPAU support. I'm having problems where, every few minutes, the screen will black out, then come back after a couple of seconds. Every time this happens, I see the following in the mythfrontend.log:

Code:

I have a sparkle 9500GT PCI card. The drivers are the latest ones in the repositories (190.53). The system is a 2 Ghz P4 with 1 gig of RAM. I'm using the VDPAU Slim playback profile.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue?

I have seen this too on my Sparkle PCI 8400GS. It happens less frequently than you note but it still happens. I have two 9300's embedded on mother boards that have no issue.

There are some chip set incompatibilities which may be part of the issue but I'm willing to bet it is an Nvidia bug with PCI interactions.

I was able to reduce (and almost eliminate) the issue simply by turning off the de-interlacing for your playback profile. In my case it didn't affect the video quality. If it affects your you could experiment with less demanding de-interlacing algorithms.

I have also noticed this only on 480i based programs which are encoded with H.264 (i.e. HD-PVR output) but not on higher res stuff. So one variant I have used that was very reliable was to create a video profile that used FFMPEG for <720 resolution and VDPAU for >=720.

+1 on lowering the de-interlacing settings. I only had the occasional occurence of the display being pre-empted but haven't had any since I adjusted the settings over a month ago. I also have a HD-PVR and am using VDPAU for all resolutions. Graphics card is an 8600GT.

Only thing I get now is sometimes on HD channel playback (be it an HD or non-HD program) the audio gets choppy, but restarting the front and back ends clears it up. (That's my brute force "fix" until I can look into it.)

Another theory I have is it may be something to do with PCI or possibly power based settings that may be slowing the PCI bus down.

I don't know if anyone has tried adding some kernel parameters to affect these attributes.

Turning off the de-interlacers helped, but didn't completely fix the problem. I am pretty disappointed since I spent the extra money to get a 9500 instead of an 8x00 series because I only heard good things about the de-interlacers.

sure. But I think the issue is PCI integration not the chipset per se. Have you tried modifying the PCI bus or power parameters?

You haven't said what kind of content is failing.

On mine only SD based (480i) streams are an issue. For those you could simply use ffmpeg and only use vdpau for the 720 and up as I suggested as well.
