Post subject: | High CPU usage? |
I have a 2gig celeron, 386 MB of ram. and the PVR 250. Don't know if any other information is needed to answer my question. When running top i see that the mythbackend when recording is at over 30%, is this normal for the PVR-250, seems somewhat high for a hardware encoded card. Secondly, when i watch live TV or a recording while it's recording, idle time drops below the 10%, MythFrontend jumps up close to 60%. I have an SIS 305 card with the RCA showing TV-Out. When i'm watching TV it's not really noticable, any dropped frames or anything, but if I'm watching a recording and it's recording, when I watch the new recording especially on animation, there is like one in a whilethis half ghost image, like you'll partially see the next frame but it's not complete and offset. It can be annoying. Was just wondering if these CPU's usages were "normal" for those items and is there anything I can do about it? BTW should i not run recordings at 720/480? also i have my bitrate at 6/8. THanks for any help. |

hmmm couple of things. the usage for recording seems a bit high. my athlonXP 1700+ only uses less than 10% when recording using a pvr250. and the bitrates really shouldn't make a huge difference for the recording part. what may be happening is a poor disk driver, because the only thing really happening is the pvr250 putting the encoded stream onto the disk. you may try some tests like copying large files to see if that causes high cpu utilization which would indicate the disk driver is causing the problem. now having said the bitrate doesn't affect cpu when recording it will on decode, however the resolution doesn't. At any rate, are you using the sis binary drivers. that should help you as I don't think the default sis drivers support xv and if they do I don't think it's very good. |

Yea the default sis driver stinks, doesn't support XV at all (well i'm not 100% sure, but if you don't use the sis drivers by Thomas Winischhofer http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml the playback is very choppy. Once you install his drivers it works great). I changed the bitrate and the resolution and the skipping seems to have gone away. Can i copy from that same drive to itself? I use a 6 gig driver for linux, and a 40 gig drive for my recordings. (wish there was a way for the auto install to not make /myth and /cache, the manual install just loops for me). DMA is on. Just a curiousity, can I put a second recorder in here without much problem? Another 250. Anyone know if it can record and watch live TV at the same time without too much problem? If the disk driver is the problem what can I do Xsecrets? BTW Xsecrets I want to thank you for all your helpful posts I've found that have answered many of my problems just by searching. I know I post some that have been answered before but i couldn't find. I just want to thank you for you contributions to this community. Also to Cesman and all the other contributors to such a fine product. I got mythtv running under Mandrake and didn't like the way it ran. I couldn't get it working under Debian well. I must of done something wrong. But KnoppMyth works great and I really appreciate it. This way my wife has her TIVO and I have my KnoppMyth. We would always switch back and forth on who got to record their program when it overlapped with out interests, but now I can record what i want. Thanks again. |

to test the cpu on disk copy yes you can copy to the same drive, but it would have to be a copy not a move. basically you are wanting to make the disk subsystem busy long enough to watch top and see if the cpu spikes. A second pvr250 should work just fine in that system for livetv+recording. I have a 1700+ and one pvr and one software card (more cpu usage) and I can watch livetv and record or record two programs and watch previous recording without problems or frame drops. have you looked at your cpu since you loaded the sis drivers? that may have helped. |

that cpu usage was after the sis driver. |

Do you have DMA enabled? |
