I just installed it, but it never asked me for a root password.

There should have been a screen during install where you can change these. Try "a" (no quotes). If that works, you can then change the password (as the root user) with:

I never changed the password in the install, but it apparently doesn't default to blank. I added a new account, but it isn't root.

Oh well....I'll just have to reinstall. Since I'm only 20 minutes into the process, it isn't a big deal.

As it stands now, it doesn't force you to enter a root password when you do the install. If you highlight the user on that password screen, and use the arrow keys, you'll change from mythtv --> root --> <username you created>. You can assign passwords in this fashion.

Additionally, you can go to the service menu at any time, and reassign, or assign passwords for all users. I believe they are removing this feature for security reasons, but you can do it now.

at the command line, type "sudo passwd root"
You should then see a request to enter in a new password.

Yeah, I had this issue as well. I had to go into the service menu and change the passwords from there for the root and mythtv accounts, which was no big deal, but I wouldn't have known to do it if I hadn't read this thread. There really should be some kind of message advising you to change the root and mythtv passwords. Every other install of every other Linux distro I've ever done forces you to set the root password before you can continue.

Also, "sudo passwd root" won't work. Your user account isn't in the /etc/sudoers file by default, thus it will fail and you'll get the "this incident will be reported" message (Oh no! I'm going to be reported to myself! )

"sudo passwd root" does work, I just did it on a fresh R6.00.07 install.

I didn't setup any password during installation, I skipped that step. Once you reach the frontend, just press "alt x" for a terminal, and change the root password as described.
