Hi guys,
I've just ordered a new TV and I intend to upgrade the hardware in my Mythbox.

I will be using some of the key components from my previous box.
Essentially I'll be reusing the tuner cards (Nova-t x2) and the storage (1x500gb Samsung Spinpoint + 1x1Tb Samsung Spinpoint). I intend to add a Nova-S for HD content sometime in the near future.

The new tv is a Samsung B37B650TW. I've ordered a hdmi cable to go with it and I've got a Nvidia 9500 w/512m ram which has an hdmi socket as it's tv out.

How do I set up the correct resolution for the tv from the outset? I'm considering reinstalling 5.5 as I have half an idea about what I am doing with that OS, compared to R6.

Should I go with R6 instead?

Many thanks in advance.

Chris

If you edit your xorg.conf so that the first modeline it uses is "nvidia-auto-select" it should read the EDID of your TV/monitor and select the "best" resolution it's capable of. i.e.
Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier     "Screen0"
    Device         "Device0"
    Monitor        "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth    24
    SubSection     "Display"
        Depth       24
        Modes      "nvidia-auto-select" "1280x720" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Thanks for that mike.
That suggests a post install tweak. I guess I should go with a regular install (i.e. not using the 'tv' switch) on a 5.5 upgrade.

Just out of curiosity, what hardware are you upgrading to? I went from a Pentium D930 to a Core 2 Duo E8400 and my power consumption at idle dropped from 135 watts to 85 watts. Peak power consumption dropped from 180 watts to ~105 watts. This is a system with 2 disk drives and 3 tuners.

Hi Marc,
As mentioned, the new TV is a Samsung B37B650TW (1080p) and although I'm only using DVB-t atm but the picture is fantastic, over HDMI.

Right the new hardware is:
E7400 with a TRUE cooler w. Noctura fan
Asus P5QL-E,
Gainward 9500GT w. 512mb ram
2G OZ PC6400 Ram
Tuner cards and hdd as in sig. (I'll update that later!)
I plan to add a DVB-S card and a slot loading DVD/BluRay drive - because one day...

I need to borrow the power gauge thing off my father-in-law to see what kind of power this set up now draws. My very unscientific view is it is a lot cooler running. Which means less power. :D

I'm very pleased with the setup now. Just need to build a ventilated cabinet but that's another story, which I intend to document when I get around to building it.

Regards Chris

mmm, interesting.... my network card does not appear to be recognised. It's certainy enabled in the BIOS, but 5.5 says it's not recognised. Further investigation is required.

-Edit-
I ended up installing R6 beacause there is not kernal support for my new motherboard's network card in 5.5.
