I was trying to add some linux packages to my friend's R5F1 machine and got an apt-get warning. I did not proceed.

:?: Is it safe to let apt-get remove "linux-kernel-headers-knoppix"? :?:
Code:
root@mythtv:~# apt-get install cpufrequtils sysfsutils
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  binutils libc6 libc6-dev libcpufreq0 libncurses5 libncurses5-dev libselinux1
  libslang2 libslang2-dev linux-libc-dev tzdata util-linux
Suggested packages:
  binutils-doc locales glibc-doc libc6-i686 manpages-dev util-linux-locales
Recommended packages:
  libgpm2

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  linux-kernel-headers-knoppix

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  cpufrequtils libcpufreq0 linux-libc-dev sysfsutils
The following packages will be upgraded:
  binutils libc6 libc6-dev libncurses5 libncurses5-dev libselinux1 libslang2
  libslang2-dev tzdata util-linux
10 upgraded, 4 newly installed, 1 to remove and 769 not upgraded.
Need to get 15.5MB of archives.
After unpacking 6083kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

For reference, in R5F1 the sources.list file is pointing to stable sources:
Code:
#Debian repos
deb http://ftp.debian.org stable main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org stable main contrib non-free

R5F1 is old enough that the debian version aliased "stable" has changed twice since then. You might want to look into upgrading that box as a first step.

I have pitched upgrading my friends R5F1 box. He was reluctant because it has "just worked" for 2 years without trouble. I think I have him convinced to do the upgrade.

Even though I probably won't ever do the referenced apt-get install command with his R5F1 box, what would have happened when linux-kernel-headers-knoppix was removed? Would that have corrupted the kernel or the basic operating system (and broke the box)?

Curious,
Eric

If you remove the kernel headers, and attempt to install something that needs them (such as video card drivers), the install will fail.

FYI, if your friend has a spare HDD, use gparted to copy your / filesystem from the old box to the spare HDD to keep it as a backup. Your /myth partition will be untouched during the upgrade and should you need to revert back for some reason, you can simply copy/paste the backed-up partition over to the old HDD.
