I'll also add that giving world read/write permission via "chmod 777" is, at best, frowned upon. At worst, tjc will break your kneecaps. :D

I agree. That was just a quick one to see if that was the problem and not have to worry about getting it right.

I have changed it to chmod 744

I think I will edit my original post to show how I got it working to help others if they find this through a forum search.

You might also add it to the wiki if you get a chance.

I have one last issue with this problem.

The chmod does not survive a reboot. Here is the command I am using:

chmod 666 /dev/ttyS0

Is there something I have to do to get it to be persistent or a group that the Mythtv user needs to be a member of?

Thanks.

You could make a script to set that at startup, but I'll bet that's not a preferred way of doing it.

Here's a possible lead on how this might be done with udev. I think udev is being used with R6 for other things (drives) so you might be able to get it to deal with your serial port too.

I use serial channel changing and it works fine for me. On my backend the ports/devices are owned by root with a group of uucp. I do notice that the mythtv user is a member of the uucp group.

Could that be your problem?

Yes... I think.

I figured since this part of the problem was more of an Arch issue than a LinHES issue I would post over on their forum.

One of the members there suggested making the mythtv user a member of that group. I did but I haven't got to test it yet as my family is using it right now!!!

I noticed yesterday that the uucp group was associated with the /dev/ttyS0 but didn't want to just start adding the mythtv user to groups until I asked someone more knowledgeable with Arch.

I will post back once I can test it and let you all know if that was the fix and if so I will update my WIKI entry as well.

**EDIT**

Just kicked off a recording through mythweb and it changed channels and is recording so I guess that did it. Didn't want to wait for the kids to finish watching a movie on the box.

Thanks again for all the help.

Here is the command I used:

gpasswd -a mythtv uucp

From the reply I got back on the Arch Forum.
