I have an old R5.5 box a friend is running. The box boots, but never attempts to load X. It just boots to the login prompt. If you log in as mythtv and try a 'pkill xinit' nothing happens. There is no /var/log/Xorg.0.log generated at all. How can I manually startx on the system?

Both of these commands fail to produce anything:

startx
xinit

EDIT: Does this look right:
Code:
$ ps aux | grep .Xauthority
mythtv    3161  0.0  0.1   2692   724 ?        S    18:33   0:00 xinit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc -- /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc -auth /home/mythtv//home/mythtv/.Xauthority

Why is my .Xauthority in /home/mythtv//home/mythtv

Is the double slash and repeat ~ an error?

EDIT2:

1) Deleted the .X11-* stuff in /tmp
2) Installed the nvidia driver (see tjc's tips for R5.5)
3) Rebooted and everything worked
