While trying to get netatalk running and following it's install directions, I screwed up the /etc/ld.so.conf file. All it shows is the line for the berkelydb stuff needed by netatalk. Could someone post what their default knoppmyth file looks like. On restart even after doing ldconfig, the backend and gdm will not start because of error while loading shared libraries: libXo.so.1 and libX11.so.6. I am pretty sure these did not get touched while doing what I was doing, so I think it is just the screwed up file that tells it where to look for libs. I may be wrong, but at the moment I am desperate.
