I searched the forums, and I guess not too many people get their non-HD TV over the air anymore. Well, I do. Yes, it's very sad. Anyway, here's the issue: Most of what I record is on UHF, from stations with acceptable, if not spectacular, signal. Syndicated sitcom reruns, mostly. And Smallville. Recently I caught an episode of CSI: Miami, and I'm hooked. I am now recording CSI's Vegas, Miami, and NY (I am madly in love with Melina Kanakaredes!). Since they are on VHF, the quality of the picture is MUCH better. However, I have noticed when watching these programs, whether live or recorded, the system struggles to reproduce it, and this is manifest in stuttering audio and video. I assumed that the encoding process was just choking on the higher quality signal, but lowering the bitrate from 4400 to 3300 (and even lower) didn't help. Not that I know whether or not it should. Again, it's only on VHF stations with crystal-clear pictures. CSI's, Scrubs, non-syndicated Everybody Loves Raymond, they all stutter. The UHF programs, with more grainy picture quality, do not. Is there a setting I need to change somewhere? Here's my setup: ECS K7S5A Pro mobo Athlon XP 2000+ proc 384MB SDRAM WinTV PVR350 nVidia GeForce4 FX52xx 64MB (I think) ENS1371 soundcard Compaq V70 17" monitor Knoppmyth R4V4 MythTV 0.15.1 Thanks in advance! |

you've got a pvr350 hardware encoding it is not that it can't keep up encoding a good signal, I have heard of people pushing these up to like 60 on crystal clear digital connections. The first place I would look is to make sure dma is enabled on the hard drive. |

oh crap, i forgot to mention: DMA enabled, ATA100, it's the only drive on the controller. |

well don't know what to tell you. the only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is what resolution are you capturing in? usually use 480x480 or 720x480 unless you are in PAL land then you need to change the vert res though I forget what it is. also make sure you are set to 4:3 not square. |

Yep. 480x480 and 4:3 ratio. I guess I also didn't mention that the audio/video only goes choppy like every 15-30 seconds or so. I don't know if that tells you anything either. thanks for the headwork. I will get back to it on my own. |

hmmm someone had something like that on the alpha for R5. I'll have to check with him and see if he ever figured it out. |

Also, what are your audio settings in your recording profiles? I'm not sure if the PVR cards expect a certain bitrate... I always use 48000 since that's what DVDs prefer. |

Xsecrets: Thanks, I'd appreciate it! ceenvee: For live TV it's on 48000, and i don't even think it will let me change it, actually. I think the default recording profile is set at 48000 as well, but I will have to check on that. What about the bitrate for the audio? I have been messing with that a bit too, but keeping it between 128 and 256. I had it set for 128 initially, but was getting some artifacts in the higher frequencies, so I cranked it a little. Is 256 too high (or 128, for that matter)? |

Firmware for the PVR 250. The driver actually has to upload this to the card for it to work. Cesman has permission from Hauppauge to include a certain version with KnoppMyth. Other versions may work better for some cards. However this isn't necessarily a case of newest is best. You'll need to do some research... Sorry I can't provide more help with this right now, but I'm just taking a quick break from recovering after a finger flub which I deleted about half my work for the last two days...
