First off, apologies for the unsophisticated question. I did search and found several threads which bore some relevance, but let me ask directly and perhaps people can help point me in the right direction.

I have a new, KnoppMyth installation which is working beautifully. The computer lives on my house LAN (ip's 192.168.x.xxx ) I can see the shared folder where the mpg files reside from my windows computer and when I click on them, windows media player plays them effortlessly.

From my other Linux computer on the same network I can also browse to the shared folder, but when I click on the saved mpg files, they are first copied over the network to the local computer then mplayer opens and they are played.

It seems odd that in this case Windows is handling the files exactly as I would like and Linux is not. What do I need to do on the Linux computer to make it play the files without first copying them?

Thanks in advance for any hints.

This is browser behaviour. If you run something like xine or mplayer and point them at the NFS mounted partition it will play directly from there.
