Hi,

I use the import function of my Mythtv to rip a music cd and I set the decoding format to ogg. The song are not playable ( I mean it plays the song, but I hear only hum. I have the same problem when I encode into mp3 format with variable bitrate. MP3 with static bitrate works great.
Is this a known problem?

Thanks

ce ya, Andre

Hi! I can't necessarily help you fix the problem, but I can help you narrow it down.

There are 3 major possibilities for this problem:

Case 1) MythTV box encoding problem, but no playback problem.
Case 2) MythTV box playback problem, but no encoding problem.
Case 3) MythTV box encoding problem AND playback problem.

Encode some Variable Bit Rate (VBR) OGG and MP3 files on another machine and try to play them on your MythTV box. Make sure they're VBR, since you seem to have no problems playing back Constant Bit Rate (CBR) music.

If playback works on the music you encoded elsewhere, then you know playback works ok and there's a problem with encoding (Case 1). I've had problems encoding to OGG using KnoppMyth R4V4.1 and R4V5. There's some strangeness with the OGG libraries when you cross my hardware with KnoppMyth. Post your hardware and distro info and maybe we can find some commonality.

If playback fails in MythTV with the music you encoded elsewhere, then it looks like a playback problem. Try playing the same music from the command line using ogg123 or mpg123 to see if it's a MythTV problem or a library problem.

Copy the music you encoded with MythTV to another box. If it plays fine on the other box, you at least know that encoding worked (Case 2). If it doesn't play fine, then encoding is failing (Case 3). Try encoding it using cdda2ogg. Do a 'man cdda2ogg' to see the options to use VBR. If it works with cdda2ogg and not MythTV, then it's MythTV that has the problem. If it fails with cdda2ogg, it points to ogg libraries.

As I said, I've had failures with ogg encoding, too, and I don't have enough data to get to the bottom of it.
