I think it would make dual booting much easier if autoinstall made a partition hda1 about 400 meg and formatted it at fat32. This way windows 2000/xp could be installed anywhere on any disk after Knoppmyth.

I believe/hope it would take little effort to change Knoppmyth to do this and it would provide great benefit to the users.

Any comments? :)

I think this suggestion will be greeted as coldly a street walker at church picnic.

Cesman's stated intent is for KnoppMyth to be used to set up a dedicated set top box as easily as possible. He has said many times in the past that anything not relevant to that goal is extraneous.

Everyone would just be hoping she doesn't finger them out.... ;)

David - many if not most KnoppMyth users are looking for a "set top box", i.e. a dedicated computer just for running Myth. Having a dual-boot computer with Windoze on it is not going the right direction. KnoppMyth is also a great starting point for anyone who desires a Myth box, and I think this is where you're coming from. But realize that most users here want (a) stability and (b) ease of configuring a set-top box. Neither of which is enhanced by Windoze!

I do thank you for replying.

I can't help but feel like more energy is being spent explaining why knoppmyth should not be changed, rather than simply incorporating simple ideas as we go along.

The change I am referring to would not even be noticed by your stated target user base, and would help those who want to do more.

I don't want to be a bother, or start a win/lin debate. I don't like windows -- I simply accept that it is here right now, and use it as a trouble shooting and tryout tool.

thanks again.

Well see here's the deal, what you suggest might not be noticed by the user, but would be a bother to implement, and since it doesn't fit with their goals for the project why would the developers take the bother.

More to the point, incorporating every clever idea someone comes up with into a project is the sure road to ruin. We're not expending our energy here to frustrate your creative input but rather to forestall other ill considered "enhancement" proposals by pointing out the central design goals and focus.

There's already more than enough work for our heroic developers related to good solid core goal issues.

Your suggestion is far more disruptive than you think. You have asked for hda1 to be formatted as FAT32. I presume you mean for this to be set aside and not used by KnoppMyth. The boot drive already has four partitions defined, so now we have to create extended partitions for Myth use. Or worse, try to boot Linux on the FAT32 partition and share it with Windows? This is a SYSTEM and changing one part of it creates ripples throughout.

Please feel free to use KnoppMyth as a base for your experiments. It's still the fastest way to get a Myth box running, even if you manually partition the hard disk to suit yourself.
