Right, this is an installation question, I thought but someone thought it wasn't as it got nuked from the installations section (how intensely annoying as I can't remember exactly what I wrote), why it can't just be moved I don't know

To summarise my origonal, carefully crafted message that I now have no record of:

I have a 16:9 projector and a 4:3 15"TFT monitor connected to my knoppmyth box, which has the following hardware:
ABIT kt7a-raid MB
1GHz AMD athlon
Abit Nvidia FX5600 video card
PVR-250 TV card
SB PCI128 Live sound card

the box is running great but I would like to finish the installation by configuring the dual screen nicely. Does anyone have a good dual screen setup? at the moment, I am running the projector in 4:3 mode and just cloning the TFT display. This is less than ideal as I am not using the full width of the projector. if I put it in 16:9 then the picture is streched, and the women look fat (unless they are lying down :P ). Is there a plugin or any way to configure knopmyth to use th screen as the menu/program guide and have the picture on the projector? Any other funky setups would be great to hear.

Keep up the good work, what an awsome project this is.

Rich

It's not clear what you want to do.

You have a 16:9 projector and a 4:3 screen. That much I get. But you somehow want to project 4:3 on the 16:9 projector and not make people look fat? What are you using the TFT for? I'm confused.

Most folks who run projectors (I think) are just running one screen. That's how my rear-projection TV works. I record all shows in ATSC (digital) format and when the shows are 4:3 I get black bars.

If what you want to do is change modes on your projector, I've heard of somthing called xrandr which apparently lets you switch X modelines programmatically. My RPTV is locked to a single mode, so that isn't an option for me.

If you want to sometimes watch TV on your TFT and sometimes on your projector, I'd recommend getting a separate "frontend" box for each.

speaking of the XRandR I saw an option for that, can anyone confirm if this works, because my tv supposedly supports both modes, so it would be nice if I could just let it chose the native mode based on the recorded stream.

I am not clear what I want to do myself yet Liv2Cod, I was looking for suggestions on how best to set up the 2 screens. At present I run both on 4:3 format, but that is not making best use of the projector. I'll have a look at the xrandr you suggested. I'm really just looking for inspiration on any other cool 2 screen setups that anyone has done.

well like liv2cod said it would be best to just use two frontends. Actually I do not even know of a way to get video playback on two different displays from the same card, at least if you are talking about having them both playing at the same time.

And I don't think XRandR gains you anything. for your setup, but I guess it can change the aspect ratio, but I don't see any way to set it up to do it automatically.
