I currently have my mythbox hooked up via an nVidea 8500GT-based card's DVI out to an old Sony Tube set at 720p. (36KV-HS510 it weighs more than I do, and I'm pretty fat...)

I have it on good authority :D Santa will be bringing an upgraded TV, an LG 47LG70. The big question: What's the best way to get my mythbox to start spitting out 1080p?

I have a 1280x720_60 metamode in my xorg that drives my current set; can I just add 1920x1080_60? Is there some way of running an auto detect? Should I re-upgrade to 5.5?

The box has an Athlon 64 X2 dual core 4400+ at 2.3 GHz so I'm not particularly concerned about the CPU Loading with increased resolution, but would it be better to configure myth to drive the set at 720p when watching 720p material, or let myth do the scaling and keep it outputting 1080p the whole time? I currently have myth using different modes for 720p and SD, in order to properly trigger my current set's 4:3 and 16:9 modes.

secondary question, The LG' inputs are HDMI, I know, a basic DVI->HDMI adapter won't inject audio, and I can deal with that. I currently have analog audio running to my TV, and digital audio running to my receiver. The new set will support this arrangement. But there have been threads posted about DVI+SPDIF->HDMI adapters. Most of which are "I've heard about..." "you can try..." but nothing like "I use a..." If anyone has had particularly good luck with one at 1080p please share. It would simplify my wiring quite a bit...

Thanks, Joe

If you'll be going through DVI->HDMI and using nVidia, then when X starts up there'll be extra lines in the Xorg log, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, reporting the modes that the TV says it supports through EDID. Then you choose a mode from those listed (I agree, 1920x1080_60 sounds likely) and put it in section "Screen" of the xorg.conf like usual.

I've read conflicting reports of how well TVs can rescale (apparently some of them are equal to or superior than the rescaling done by cheaper upconverting DVD players), so your best bet might be to experiment.
