Post subject:  Poor (slightly distorted) audio in MythMusic

Recently I started putting some MP3s on my KnoppMyth R4V4 box and noticed that there is slight distortion during playback. The distortion isn't all the time, if a song starts out soft it isn't there, only when the volume (or spectral complexity?) increases. Audio from TV is perfect.

Some of these MP3s were ripped on the box, and some were copied from my Mac (which were ripped my iTunes). The rate varies from 96k to 320k. All seem to have the fault. iTunes plays them back perfectly (at least to my non-audiophile ears).

Anyone else noticed this? Any ideas? Would a newer libflac help?

well libflac wouldn't have anything to do with it. liblame handles mp3's libflac provides the lossless compression for the high quality rips.

As for the problem not really sure. I don't use the mp3 portion of mythtv.

Hey .. i had your problem!!!! for months i tried to find answers... i had a SBlive5.1 retail. Well through the course of my myth experience i reloaded my mythbox 3 times.. each time with stock installs it would play fine on a very plain sounding song.. but if there was electric guitar or something heavier it would start to distort noticbly. Well finaly i went down to the store, bought the SAME dang sblive5.1 put it in and BAM perfect sound. I have no idea if this is a chipset thing, or if i had a bad sound card. But whatever the reason.. i have perfect sound. If i were you, i would switch out the card. This 20 second story took 5+ months to figure out.. :)

I had a similar problem with my via-based audio, but I noticed some light distartion during movie and tv playback also. I was able to fix the problem by opening up alsamixer and backing off the PCM level a bit. I think it's up to 100 % by default, and if I back it down to 80% or so it works great, no distartion.

Hope that helps.
