Post subject: | Help with Samba -- FIXED |
I haven't seen this in any other samba postings I have samba working on my myhtbox. I can mount my XP music directory and can list all of the files. My problem is that some of my mp3's will play and some give me an error. Upon further digging I have found the following about the files that I can play vs those that won't. 1. The metamusic table shows the won't play files with a file length of 0, the will play files have correct file lengths 2. When I ssh into my myth box i can list the files and they show good lengths (both will play and won't play files), but when I try to copy a won't play file i get the following error: "cp: reading `02 song.mp3': Permission denied". The will play files copy normally 3. My assumption is that the length issue in point #1 is that the file can't be read when the database is being updated and if I fix #2 I will fix # 1 4. The only differece in the files that I have found anywhere is that the Windows XP Owner is OFFICE-DESKTOP/Dad on the files that won't play and OFFICE-DESKTOP/Melissa on the files that will play (I don't think it has anything to do with the difference in musical tastes between me and my daughter. However she is using iTunes and I am using MusicMatch on the XP box) all of the files are stored in a fully shared directory under Dad/My Documents/My Music with a share called Music... Any ideas? |

look furthur into the permissions on the files and make sure that they are readable by everyone. |

If you have WinXP Pro, you can disable 'simple file sharing' and then set exactly what users have permissions to shares |

Post subject: | Samba - XP permissions issue fixed |
I now have access from my myth box to all of my mp3 files on my XP box. I never really determined the exact problem, so I assume that some of my files had XP permission settings that were different than others. This was probably as a result of changing global permissions associated to my login on the XP box sometime in the past. I went as far as I was comfortable with various registry related solutions, with no apperant success. In the end I copied all of the mp3 files and subdirectories to a new directory under "My Documents", set the top directory to share under a new name, modified my smbmount command on my myth box to point to that directory. All now works fine. Thanks to those who offered advice |
