Here is the situation: For about a week, my setup has been failing on the bootup. It failed at getting the IP address, said something about full duplex and freezes. Won't go further. I finally psudo got past this by changing out my ethernet card. Now it boots through the process, but states "could not determine the servers fully qualified domain, so using 127.0.0.1 or something like that. I attempted to FTP, so I could download additional files, can't get outside. So I change the IP address from 127.0.0.1 to an address that is on my local subnet. I also changed the second address to match the first in the setup screen. Now it says it can't connect to the master backend server. Problem is it is the master backend server. Just sits there, never resolves host address. . . My setup, is just an old PC trying to get it to work before I spend $$ on capture cards etc. I started this by trying to load FC3, found to many unanswered questions out there, so I thought I would try KnoppMyth. Questions: On a Front/Back combined system, how do you set up the IP addressing, did I do it right? On another note: How do you load other mythmodules, havn't found a good FAQ example on this. As a good first time poster I have searched this forum for the past week while fighting this. No luck so far. |

In mythtv-setup, leave the address as 127.0.0.1 for both. This has nothing to do ith the IP of your machine which is sound like is where you problem maybe. Run netcardconfig to setup your IP manually or via DHCP. |

So I run netcardconfig and up pops "no Supported network cards found" This card worked fine in my other computer, shows a link light on it and the switch. Is this a case that the card doesn't work with Linux, or a problem with the card? Or is there a setting that I'm missing? Thanks. |

Well, what kind of card is it? Do you know what module (driver) the card uses? |

It's a Realtek Semiconductor. As for drivers, this is where my newness in linux will shine, the drivers were automatically loaded in XP/2000 etc. Do I need to search for linux specifc drivers for this? Did a little more research, found this: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... yword=8029 However I'm not sure which driver (packet/SCO or Unixware) to use, nor how to/where to load them. |

I looked around in the kernel source, /usr/src/linux/drivers/net , and four fiiles mention Realtek; 8139too, atp, sis900 and zorro8390. I would try modprobe 8139too |

Well I see where I might have a problem. Under /usr/src/linux there is no folder/directory for drivers or net. ls shows: Makefile nclude kernel-headers.revision linux2.4.25-chw So did KnoppMyth not install this correctly, I used 4.5 modprobe 8139too results in: /lib/modules/2.4.25-chw/kernel/drivers/net/8139too.oinit_module: No Such Device it goes on showing failed etc. Hard to type them all, and since the ethernet card isn't working, no copy and paste! The actual card is RTL8029(AS) I'm going to try a reload of KnoppMyth tonight. Can't recall if I reloaded KnoppMyth after I changed the Ethernet card. I'll post my results. |

You may want to try booting a different live cd like knoppix and see if it sets it up right. If so, you can check and see what driver gets loaded. |

Re-installation of KnoppMyth worked. Ping/FTP drivers are loaded. Thanks for the help!!! |

Just for info sake.. The IP Address of 127.0.0.1 is used on the loopback interface. All normal computers (with an IP stack) have this on them and it's almost always used for the computer to "talk" to itself and is always operational. This way even if DHCP is messed up, or your network connection is down applications can still work that need to connect to TCP or UDP ports on the same computer. I have never seen any circumstance to changing or turn off this interface address. -Lane |
